actually i am going to say this in a post hi

i think that there is a lot to be said for subtext and the lack of appreciation that it garners, because to ignore subtext is to ignore a whole aspect of a text. a whole aspect of a text that is deliberately written or directed. subtext is not there to draw readers in like queerbaiting is (which is a marketing technique that does exist) because it, by nature, requires the audience to absorb the story in its entirety. and it's a disservice to the writers/directors/etc to assume that every bit of gay subtext is something that is either accidental or being used to lure in a larger audience

subtext is a whole technique of its own that contributes to a story in a massive way. because without subtext, a story is nowhere near as powerful, regardless of whether it is or isn't specifically gay subtext. you cannot have a good film/book/play/etc without having some details that are implicit rather than explicit because that would be to strip away an entire level of story

and gay subtext in particular can be so so valuable, not "just" because in various texts that was the safest way for the writer to have gay characters, but because as a technique it allows for a huge amount of depth and because if the overall story is not about a characters' gayness (but is impacted by it) then often it makes far more sense to not have them explicitly stating that they are gay if the situation doesn't require it. not in some attempt to ignore gay characters but because there are different situations which focus on different things and to have subtext is not to ignore something, if the artist really wanted to ignore something then often (though not always) that subtext wouldn't be there in the first place. subtext brings it to attention in a different way and a way that asks the audience to consider the character and the situation in light of what is implicit rather than just what it obvious (much like life!)
