i have some thoughts and headcanons

vampires can't drink anything, including alcohol, but they can drink alcoholic blood. it's so convenient that they own a bar!! they just get people drunk and then drink one of the last customers.

vampirism fits so well into their lives. i think all vampires are prone to codependency, constancy, and they all can't stand change, existing in an endless cycle of repeating the same thing. honestly, i took this from "What We Do in the Shadows"

Denis is good at hypnosis and seduction. Most often, he drinks carefully, or even pumps the blood out of the victim and stores it in the refrigerator. He secretly likes the blood of other vampires, and sometimes drinks Charlie's blood, because Mac's blood is too accessible and not so interesting.

Mac is good at physical strength and telepathy. He is the only one who wears fancy vampire clothes and drinks only men's blood. He knows about Denis's secret, but pretends not to know anything.

Charlie is very good at turning into all animals, and can talk to them. He regenerates better than anyone, and loves to fly. Charlie loves to bite, so his victims always have several bites, and he is not very careful, usually blood splashes in all directions and stains everything around. He likes that Denis drinks his blood, but pretends not to want it every time

Dee is good at seduction and turning into a shadow. She prefers to fuck her victims, and at the same time drink their blood.

Frank can control the dead, but does not do this, he uses invisibility to joke with people. He is not as careful about food as others, sometimes he drinks the blood of homeless people or pays whores for this service, without drinking them completely.

River Cartwright's family drama

As an Alex Rider stan first and foremost, the reveal of Frank Harkness as River's dad and the twisted history of the Cartwrights, River is so incredibly satisfying. Love it when spy stories pause the action and thriller plots and say 'Hey! Here's a glimpse into how fucked up this world is, and how people can be corrupt and complicated as hell. Now deal with it!' The Frank Harkness storyline takes a pause and gives us family drama, it forces us and River to question identity and morality and loyalty, question destiny and nature vs nurture.

River's life is defined by absence and deception. Abandoned by his mother, doesn't know his father, and fed lie after lie all his life, he clings to the identity formed in the shadow of his grandfather. River, who wants to be an amazing, badass spy like the O.B. and is "mentored" by Lamb, another Service legend he struggles to measure up to. And then there's a snarl in River's path when his dad turns up, alive and absolutely awful, something part of the spy world and against it too.

Both the book and show version of Frank exist to highlight just how naive River is about the spy world. Book!Frank is a psychotic paranoid with holdovers from the Cold War, training his own terrorists free from outside influence. Show!Frank takes it even further because he actually fathers all the Les Arbres children, a mercenary running his own assassin nursery, and doing black ops for multiple intelligence agencies across the globe. Both versions shakes River's perception of his own identity, forcing him to reconsider the O.B., and even the spy world he thought he understood.

In tv!SH, the Les Arbres boys are now River's half siblings, living (and not so living) proof of what River could have been, or what he might still become if he accepts Frank's offer to join "the family business." And Frank plays River like a fiddle, gives him compliments, acceptance, promises for a bright future, everything River wants in the world, but all wrong, a dark mirror. And River is never once tempted. He loathes Frank. But also, that's his father. His blood. Those are his brothers. That's inescapable. And River actually follows Frank's advice, succeeding where the Dogs and the Met fail, it eats at him. Makes him wonder. This isn't just the whole 'resist the dark side' idea (and the book version even throw out the Star Wars reference to underscore the irony of this plot), but makes River reexamine himself and his family and the world he wishes to inhabit.

The psychological fallout is visible throughout Series 5. River's behaviour, his training, and especially his interactions reflect his disorientation and trauma. Without the O.B. as an anchor, he is lost, struggling to reconcile his own identity with the reality of his father, his grandfather, his brothers.

Not to make everything be about Alex Rider, but this is AR vibes. This is John Rider's shadow hanging over Alex, the Scorpia reveals and everyone projecting onto him, trying to ensure he won't be pulled in the wrong direction and it just making things worse. River basically going through something similar with Frank, not ever really being tempted by the offer, because he sees Frank for who he is and hates it, refuses to be like him or his brothers. But that doesn't mean the world will see him the same after this. Patrice's actions, Yves with Westacres, even Bertrand, they along with Frank colour River now. S5 shows him unraveling, unmoored, and with Frank coming back in S6? Oh baby, it's going to be brutal.

Yesss, question identity, question loyalty, question everything. Gimme that deliciously messy trainwreck.
