Welp. Guys, I found the reason Alastor rejected Vox way back then. Hoo boy...
Alastor has always been trying to get off Rosie's leash. That was his entire motive throughout both seasons (even if it was slightly less obvious in season 1), and he finally got what he wanted in season 2. Good for him and all, yadda yadda...
But it got me thinking.
What did Alastor have to gain from befriending Vox?
Alastor really only does things for his own personal profit. He's just like Vox. Even if he pulls it off more sneakily, he's selfish and greedy, always wanting something bigger and brighter. And maybe that's what drew him to Vox in the first place.
He just needed someone; it didn't matter who. Vox was as good a choice as any, and he was clearly enamored with Alastor from the beginning. At least he was mildly tolerable. (Maybe a little bit more than that...)
He needed a sinner he could help. He needed a sinner who had the potential to be so influential...
...so iconic...
...and still oh so predictable...
...that they could become the most powerful sinner in Hell.
It's all for a reason. So he can continue his fun.
And, fuck, this upturns everything. It means Alastor has been trying to get rid of Rosie from the very beginning. He wanted her gone; he didn't like being restricted. After all, would you? It's one of the few things in this show that you can't blame him for.
And it also means that Alastor had a reason for rejecting Vox back then.
"We could rule Hell. Together! As partners!"
"Partners" implies equals. "Together" implies equals, and GOD, Alastor thought the godforsaken fucking serial murderer with a passion for killing those with more power over him in hopes of taking over their roles would be less fucking oblivious than this! Doesn't he see?! He's so far out of his fucking element! What a stupid man!
Alastor WANTED Vox to usurp him! From the very beginning! They were never meant to become friends - that was just a byproduct of the way they met! A byproduct of how fucking DUMB he was! How HELPLESS!
FRIENDS?!
"THERE ARE NO FRIENDS IN HELL, VINCENT."
Well, there were never meant to be. I have one final point to make...
Because...
Despite everything...
It's still him.
Vox is the most powerful sinner in Hell. Alastor's gotta hand it to him.
He's gotta hand it to him.
