why hangë makes me cry [manga spoilers ahead]
hangë is way more than “funny crazy scientist!!!!” they care about a species of beings that everyone else just wants to kill on command without thought or empathy for their lives. hangë understands that they’re just listening to biology, that they’re just scared and hungry. they don’t treat them like disgusting monsters, but tries to connect with them. they try to bring out their humanity when everyone else would be okay with just murdering them on command. when they’re doing pain tests on sawney and bean, they cry with them, because “how could [they] not, dammit?” moblit, a character who canonically made sure to check up and help maintain their physical wellbeing died for them RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM, because they couldn’t listen or react in time. they probably felt so guilty over it, especially since moblit was always pulling them back to safety or scolding them for not being careful, but they didn’t take his warnings and he paid the price for it. their sacrifice was making up for that, finally repaying the debt that had been weighing on their shoulders the entire war. but at their core, they are a good, compassionate person who wants to save even the worst, most vile of creatures, and then save humanity by helping the titans first. they understand that violence is necessary, it’s war, but it doesn’t have to be the solution. knowledge and helping one another and basic empathy will get them there. even if they have lots of anger and anger is probably the emotion they feel the strongest, its that anger that drives them to assist others. they’re angry at the war, so they try to understand titans. they’re angry that moblit and erwin died for their sake, they have a good heart, so they try to protect their comrades in their wake. they are one that just wants to help and cause the least amount of damage as possible to either side of war in the process, and that doesn’t sound crazy to me.
