i think my favorite thing about essek's backstory is the sheer arrogance baked in to everything he's doing. it's not just, i need to save my mother, it's I need to be the one to save my mother.
even acknowledging that hiding his mother's illness is treason and therefore asking anyone for help would be asking them to commit a crime at best and risking getting turned in at worse, AND acknowledging that he's probably tried to appeal to the bright queen+kryn dynasty to let him study the beacon (if he wasn't too paranoid to do so) and they said no, essek DOES still have people he could've turned to.
they added verrat for a reason*, they showed us that essek isn't actually alone, and that there are high-ranking figures that don't agree unilaterally with the dynasty's rules. essek could have confided in verrat or others, hell he could have tried to petition the crown to let him at least research typhros and try to find a cure. surely the dynasty would support trying to cure the one thing that kills them forever, no? idk maybe it's a stretch but i'm just saying essek had options
but essek decided that not only could he not trust anyone in the dynasty (effectively saying everyone in the dynasty is too blindly religious to entertain anything he has to say, looking down on them for their, in his opinion, ridiculous devotion) but he also decided that he will be the one to unearth the secrets of the beacon when centuries (millennia?) of people before him could not.
essek thinks he can crack the code while deceiving the dynasty right under their nose and working with a foreign, antagonistic power with unknown motivations. he thinks he can control this situation he's created and he thinks this so resolutely that he is willingly, knowingly, risking the lives and souls of himself, his family, and his country.
essek's arrogance comes through in so many of his choices and interactions (sneering to trent about how it would take centuries to teach trent the basics of dunamancy despite only being a century and change old himself, his snide comment to his mother about her faith, the fact that he LITERALLY floats above others) and it's one of my favorite things about his character because he is smart. objectively, he is smart. and yet his belief in his own intelligence makes him do such stupid things. not only is this realistic, but it's FUN
it's so fun to me how he disdains the dynasty for its "blind" belief in the luxon but doesn't recognize his own blind faith in his own abilities. and (putting this below the cut bc spoilers for campaign 2 and essek's story)
hello hello, an ask to say hello!! I am building a little summer syllabus for myself and would like some movie recs from an actual movie person, please. Do not need to be "good" per se, just enriching movies (even if that means they are bad and the enrichment is tearing it to shreds). thank you thank you 💖
okay ive been thinking about how to break this down. ill just separate them into categories of GOOD (FOR REAL) and GOOD (KINDA ASS)
GOOD (FOR REAL)
Buffet Infinity. found footage cosmic horror movie about a the beef between two local restaurants
Pontypool. zombie movie that utilizes sound as horror in a pretty intriguing way
A Powerful Thang. 50 minute movie about a black couple anticipating their first sexual experience
Eve's Bayou. supernatural southern gothic drama about a little girl uncovering secrets about her family
Bamboozled. spike lee joint, black comedy about the nature of satire and at what point it just becomes the thing its becoming. bluntly its about minstrel shows so theres a lot of black face so. thats your warning
Twinless. black comedy about a friendship forming between two men who met in a group for twins grieving their deceased siblings
It's What's Inside. a friend group from college reunites for an evening and begin dicking around with a strange device one of them brought, bringing old tensions to the surface. funny as hell i love realistic arguing
Entergalatic. animated romcom between a man and his neighbor at his new apartment. the premise is simple as hell so i cant go into detail
Saint Maud. deeply religious hospice nurse takes it upon herself to save the soul of her terminally ill patient
Sorry to Bother You. surreal black comedy set in a heightened reality about a telemarketer plunged into a corporate conspiracy when he finds success at work when using his "white voice".
GOOD (KINDA ASS)
John Dies at the End. film adaptation of the first book in a series about a bunch of Midwest losers fighting interdimensional monsters. its not a good adaptation but it has shit like penis doorknobs
The Stuff. horror movie about the insidious nature of a popular new food item known only as "the stuff"
Forbidden Fruits. mean girls meets the craft. i dont think its particularly intriguing but theres a lot of girl boss slay moments and cunty outfits and i know theres an audience for that. it also has victoria pedretti
Bringing Down the House. this shit is from my childhood so itll always be funny to me. but it fucking sucks. its about a black woman (played by queen latifah) recently released from prison convincing a white lawyer to help clear her name for a crime shed been framed for. brother this shit has aged like yogurt. betty white calls a little boy a fag
The Muppets' Wizard of Oz. another staple of my childhood. what if dorothy had goals of becoming a singer, and the plot of the wizard of oz was somewhat related to this. just watch it for the muppets bits we all love muppet bits
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die. man from the future recruits random people in a diner to help him win a war. hijinxs ensue. you think the movie will explain itself eventually and it just. never does.
War of the Worlds (2025). Ice Cube refuses to deliver a single line normally. the whole movie is a shitty zoom call
Greener Grass. dreamlike black comedy about suburbia. i felt like i was having a heart attack the whole time i was watching it
Repo! The Genetic Opera. i cannot believe i almost forgot my favorite movie of all time. goth horror musical where most of the cast cant sing about an evil company that loans organs and repossesses them if you default on payments
Match. horror movie where a woman gets catfished. i cannot begin to get into the shit that happens in this movie. it feels like an american horror story season but with more cock.
helloo! i'm on the lookout for a few longterm rp partners. if you're the kind that loves gushing over ocs and making pinterest boards and playlists and yapping about them— plis hit me up!
i crave fun ships and getting all invested in our ocs and story. the kind that has us going 'just one more reply' at 3am in the night and just lots and lots of yapping!
i'm open to (modern/high) fantasy, greek mythos inspired plots, ghibli-like whimsy plots, supernatural, SoL with darker twists to them, fairytale retellings, apocalyptic settings, and so on!
a few plot ideas (these are all mumu btw):
☆ a tragic, war-torn second prince x the court jester (bonus points if he is not what he seems to be/is an assassin/enemy in disguise) or prince x loyal knight! (there have been way too many golden brown edits floating around in my feed and now i want angsty, slowburn medieval gay romance pliss)
☆ a high fantasy rp inspired by the mortal instruments or poj or tsoa. give me cruelly righteous angels, tricky faes, forgotten gods, witty, dangerous demons— a world where we can build our own magic systems and come up with rich lore, weave in drama and emotion into over-reaching plot ideas
☆ anything with pirates, merfolk, ghost ships, curses, prophecies, high stakes, chaos and drama! especially if the romance is between members from opposing pirate crews or pirate x someone from the royal fleet/royalty
☆ a high fantasy set in the medieval times. A priestess (my oc Celeste) who is on the run with a massive bounty on her head. a living weapon, they call her. maybe there is a prophecy involved, maybe a particular superpower wants to monopolize her powers for themself to commit atrocities or to fulfill an over-reaching goal of theirs. enemies to lovers, antagonistic characters pit against each other, possible stockholm syndrome, one corrupting the other but the priestess gradually grows to become just as unhinged and dangerous (pliss gimmie an antagonistic power couple!!)
☆ mafia-esque plots! give me your flawed, unhinged, dangerous, crime boys to write against mine! Love, love dark themes, dead 🕊, SLOWBURNS, violence and all that good stuff! i like keeping things realistic and gritty here. stories set in the underbelly of the city. power struggles and bad blood between rivalry gangs. revenge. betrayal. moral dilemmas. would really like to explore a (mxm) dom x dom kinda pairing (ngl i have a soft spot for big scary men gradually growing softer for each other amidst all the chaos)
☆ anything you want! tell me about the plot ideas you've been wanting to write! yap to me about your ocs!
(ps. much appreciated if you could give my pinned post a read before interacting ^^)
I've always been excited for Rekindled but that post on "same thing as LO's predatory dynamic but you're not supposed to find it hot" EXCITES ME EVEN MORE??
Trashy manhwa/webtoons are my guilty pleasure but often they have SUCH an interesting premise and dynamic only for the MC to put up with the most horrendous war-crimes-man because... misunderstood sad boi?
I'm so hyped to see us delve into a relationship where someone's realistically shitty - not, like, Evil Incarnate - and we get to see another complex character coming to terms with that. Questioning that behavior yet being drawn to it.
coughs loudly and completely unsuspiciously
I'm hoping for the best that the expectations I've laid out for you all pay off in the end uwu (we're definitely approaching a pivotal "Shakespearean tragedy in motion" moment in the story huehuehue)
But yeah, tbh I feel like LO both pioneered and suffered from the growing trend of mainstream romance becoming entirely entrenched in toxic ships and abusive-dressed-up-as-couple-goals heteronormativity. Harlequin pulp romance never dies but it's frankly boring how it's become the straight up norm now and every publisher / writer / creator is chasing it in spite of how oversaturated it is.
Even Rachel admitted to this herself (before she dirty deleted most of her Twitter back in those days) that shit like the age gap in LO was "simple a saturation of the genre that it is influenced by", but still went out of her way anyways to glorify it and treat Hades and Persephone as a perfect do-nothing-wrong couple despite how toxic their entire dynamic is (and despite the fact that unlike many other stories in this genre, Lore Olympus is supposed to be based on Greek mythology which was seemingly more aware of the tragedies of forced marriages than Rachel was in 2019 onwards).
At worst it's harmful writing with how much of LO was seemingly reinforced by Rachel's own biases and beliefs growing up, at best it's boring writing because in spite of being aware of these tropes, she didn't do anything to subvert them or give her audience any kind of new perspective on them. She just went "yep, I did this because my favorite genre does it, I'm not gonna do anything original or new with that concept despite it being applied to such a unique premise so cope!"
Honestly I just want to find my own closure and bring my own end in whatever form I can to this grossly misrepresented version of The Hymn to Demeter where Hades is the sexy hero and Demeter is the cruel helicopter parent and Persephone is the helpless victim being torn in two directions between them. I get why it's so popular within the framework of dark romance as a genre, I'm just tired of it - like the many toxic ship tropes that have clutched mainstream romance by the throat - being the default.
It's not gonna stop books like this from being written, that would be an unreasonable and unrealistic thing to hope for, but I hope what I make here at least inspires more people to do more with these concepts and bring more original ideas to the table than simply settling for the same cookie cutter templates and tropes. These genres deserve more than that. I know I sound pretentious as fuck saying that and I probably am, but I'm just someone who has a huge soft spot for romance and as much as I get giddy over certain ship tropes as much as the next person, I'm also someone who appreciates and remembers and holds onto a well-crafted story a lot longer than any "kicking feet in the air when they finally smooch" feeling can give me.
That's why I still revisit stories like Alfie and Sundome. They're both smut but they still have tons to offer in storytelling and character depth. Those short-term gratifying stories that are just fluffy and unserious are fun and great when I just want an emotional heartthrob rush, but they're often forgotten about as soon as I'm reading the next thing.
It's the stories that actually leave me feeling real shit for the characters and their struggles and their stories that stick with me for years. And those are the stories I'm compelled to write.
In Don’t Look Back, before We Won’t Wear Chains ends, will we see Leia destroy the Hutt Empire? And/or kill Jabba so she can become a Huttslayer again? I also do deeply love seeing Satine and Leia discussing political issues and ideologies… Even when they explode due to high emotions…
I try never to say never with my writing, because Things Happen and get way out of my control very quickly, but currently, as of this moment right now, the destruction of the Hutt Empire is not in the cards (or rather, the outline). I'd love to do something, but one of the issues is that actually dismantling a crime syndicate that controls/rules multiple planets is that it is another huge political undertaking, and a pretty ugly second war to start, realistically. And like, I'm not married to realism in DLB. The end goal is a happy ending by at least some measure. But this plot would just be so big, I don't think there's room for it with between everything else I've planned out.
Feel free to happily imagine it's how Shmi, Leia, and the clones spend their "retirement" though.
Glad to know you enjoy Leia and Satine. They are absolutely explosive on screen together, but it really does make them fun.
Manga spoilers and theory
Some days ago I saw a post theorizing that the ink that Coco used on the first chapter had come from Qifrey's silverwood. I assume this would happen like, during the experiments, the brimcaps had somehow extracted woodcruor from him and kept it, then Iguin put that in the "wand" he gave to little Coco.
Now I can't tell exactly how this would happen, because if extracted normally, it would require Qifrey to remain a tree for some time, enough for a branch or two to start wilting, then be mind-wiped and "restored". If they'd done that, they would have proof that you can bring back the silverwood host no matter how much time passes since the tree takes over their body. But with Custas' case, Lestisse appears to just now find out that this is a possibility. Though, as far as theorizing goes, it's perfectly possible that whoever was responsible for Qifrey's experiments just didn't tell Lestisse anything about it.
So for theory's sake, let's say that this is what happened, and that the ink Coco used the first time had actually come from Qifrey.
Which by itself may make for some angst (maybe?) and kind of connection, like how Coco's first foray into magic came through Qifrey against his will, and then how Qifrey chose to be her teacher, and while I wholly like this as an idea, thinking and thinking about this makes me wanna take it deeper.
Something that kinda catches my attention in the first chapter is how…. sinister the way he appears is. Coco is "hunted" by dark shadows as she draws the big spell, and then once she completes it, Qifrey all but materializes behind her.
Which kinda piques my curiosity. Was Qifrey so sneaky and Coco so immersed in drawing that she didn't notice him coming into her room? That she didn't even hear the steps on the wooden floor or the door opening?
I am perfectly willing to suspend my disbelief and just simply not care for the specifics. Maybe the sinister aura was to signify that something bad was about to happen. But this is why this is a theory for me to have fun with 😁
So… what if, through the theory that the ink Coco used had come from Qifrey… the spell had actually summoned him? Like outright teleport him there against his will, or at the very least he could somehow sense it when "his ink" was activating spells? I mean, yeah, he had grown suspicious of that picture book on his own, and he seemed to plan on going back either way, but what if the ink gave him no choice but to actually appear there?
Now the thing is, why would that be important?
It's because of something that actually seems to not make that much sense to me. Iguin calls Coco "their child of hope". But I'm like, pal, you gave this toddler a pen with a conjuring ink and some VERY dangerous spells she could realistically copy. If Qifrey hadn't appeared to pull her out, Coco would have turned to stone. Investing in a child becoming your Chosen One™ only to endanger them sounds counter-productive, and at the same time, they appear super chill with leaving Coco to be tutored by a guy who very clearly hates their guts.
So what I'm thinking is... what if all that was part of their plan? Basically:
We've got this ink from this silverwood host. He very conveniently is still alive right now and learning magic. We cannot use this ink because we might accidentally summon him or alert him to our location.
This toddler can actually prove our point. How about we give her a book with some basic and mayyyyybe a few war-crime spells along with a pen and ink from that silverwood guy? Wait that guy is studying to be a witch master? Excellent.
So okay. She draws with it. Even if she draws the petrifying spell, the guy will be summoned, realize shit's about to go down and pull her out because that's what pointed caps with their superiority complex do innit.
Absolute worst case scenario, they get caught in the spell. We undo the spell enough to pull him out, erase his memory of that day, then try again with another kid.
Less worse case scenario, he pulls her out but erases her memory. We swoop right in to act as her saviours and tell her how we can undo the magic and help her get back at the stupid pointed caps that did this to her. Inconvenient, but might work.
Best case scenario... the guy realizes the book is a lead to us, his curiosity gets the better of him... and he takes the girl as his apprentice. Practically doing our job for us until she's learned enough to join us.
Yes, I realize how convoluted this is, and that it has a ton of holes, and I admit I haven't re-read all the parts where Iguin appears. It's just very interesting to me that Iguin seems very chill with leaving Coco under Qifrey's care and tutelage, and also didn't seem to have an issue giving a little child the means to cast a spell that can petrify her and her entire house. But hey, look, she made it out, and now she's being taught magic! Might as well relax and let things come to us.
As for Qifrey not explaining to Coco how he happened to appear at the right moment... Qifrey, keeping secrets??? I am shocked!
... Yeah, I mean, it's not like he could tell her that the ink she'd used came from him and that is how he was summoned at the right time. Plus, it appears he's the one witch in that place that knows the most about silverwoods, and until Custas' case he was certain that there aren't any human hosts other than him, at least, none that weren't taken over by trees. So, there would be no way for pointed cap witches to know that, if a host was restored, they could be able to summon that host simply by using ink that had come from them, since they use conjuring ink that has only come from existing trees. So, before Coco figured out that he's a host, he would have no reason to tell her he was summoned. Now that she knows, though... maybe it would be time for another revelation or two.
I don't know. I know it's convoluted and may not actually fit the plan of the brimcaps. But it was interesting coming up with it.
I can't get over the marathon of excellence that is the first five episodes of Deep Space Nine.
First you have the two-part pilot that I'm treating as one episode of the entire series, where we are introduced to nearly all of the major players in the series and in a whopping, staggering moment not of an intense crisis but of the more intense post-crisis: the direct aftermath of a brutal war that is in truth very far from over. Toss in existential crises in the form of an epistemological meditation on the meaning of grief as a consequence of love using the language of time, and you've got a series pilot that should be taught in film and writing schools the world over.
Then, just in case you were feeling like you need a minute, you have the second episode -- let me repeat again, of the entire series -- featuring a terrorist plot that threatens the stability of the extremely delicate peace attempting to be created by a population still suffering the horrific crimes perpetrated against it by an occupying force determined to overthrow said peace the minute Starfleet looks away.
You're probably reeling now, but too bad, because we're keeping up this whiplash tour of the human condition with the third episode -- once again, of the entire series -- with a story so packed that it's never heard of the A-plot and B-plot approach because if you're good television you can do both at the same time and have it just be an episode. Let's ratchet up the dial on religious fundamentalism masquerading as spiritually guided moralism with a look at the separation of church and state in the classroom but in a classroom that's also in space, but let's add the small matter of threatened civil rights under the carceral state so you don't get complacent.
You may then have exactly two seconds to take a breath because we're going right into the fourth episode now, with deadly biological weapon as yet another terrorist plot but can you blame anyone really, when there's still that war I mentioned in the first episode still haunting everyone around you? it might be a good thing to talk it out with someone, but you'd need a shared language or a common ground for that kind of beginning reconciliation, which would be convenient but not realistic, so let's make this particular weapon a virus that literally makes you incapable of communication at all. no need to read into the metaphor! this is Star Trek! we're just having fun!
haha! more fun now with episode five, and your friendly neighborhood Prime Directive's back to remind you this is in fact still Star Trek, so here's a brand new culture and species and worldview incompatible with your own ethical positions but don't even think about doing something to protect a vulnerable individual who doesn't need you to understand their worldview but does need you to respect it. but hey, it's Deep Space Nine -- what's a little war crime between (new) friends?
oh, and episode six of the entire series is the return of Q. ha! welcome to Star Trek! fuck you! and stay for a drink! you'll need it!
