Concept Sketches - Vicky
These are some concept character sketches I did for some of the boss characters.
Rough Script - Vicky
I decided to make some rough scripts so that I can get an idea of the multiple choice questions and options in the game. Follow these links below:

Main Character Sprites - Vicky
Here are the two variations of sprites I used in the animatic.
Mood Board and Game Explanation - Vicky (Personal Account)
I have taken various pictures that have inspired me during this project and compiled them into a mood board.
GAMEPLAY
For gameplay, we looked at undertale. This personally helped me get a good grasp at what the game would be like as it is an RPG game that gives you the choice of adding someone to your crew or not. You can build relationships as your travel through each island uncovering the secrets of the islands and putting together each piece of the treasure map. Each character can give you different stats, for example, if you have Gurney on your team, you would +2 Health. If you had Fingers on your team, you would have +2 intelligence. This would give you different experiences of gameplay.
In addition, you can build relationships within the game. In undertale you can choose to let a character live or die. In Jolly Roders, you can choose to have a character on your crew or not. You can also potentially marry that character.
Art Style
I decided to look at the art style of Hilda when lining my work. The brush looks rather sketchy and I thought that would look nice for the 2d stills of the characters. I also looked at Disney reference sheets for the Gulls to get a goofy style for the birds that is somewhat humanized but still very bird like. As for colour, I thought that a simpler more cartoony style could work well as it will immediately draw your attention to the character.
The backgrounds were based heavily on undertale as they are simple and you can easily navigate your way around the area (helpful for the younger players). I didn’t want too bright of colours as it would distract from the main sprite and characters.
I based the main character sprite on a mix of a Pokemon sprite and Professor Layton. It was simple and an walk cycle was quick and effective to animate. This would make it easier to animate any other characters who would walk around the area if they were to be animated in the same style.
Early sketches and a pixel of Gurney. This character and his ship are filled with strange muppets and sesame street like magic. These puppets have a life of their own and seek human souls to add to their crew.
Character Turn Arounds - Vicky
I tried doing several turn arounds to get an idea of the characters.
