Finally got to watch The Last Viking! It was a wonderful film. Smart and clever and bittersweet, I kept finding myself surprised at each turn. I just was never sure what to expect next but each scene fell into place naturally, and the ending made me cry a little. ❤️ Definitely recommend, especially if you’d like to see something a little different from all the mainstream stuff out there. Mads and cast and crew were brilliant as always and this film really REALLY showcases his range. ❤️

I will admit I started the film a bit annoyed with his character but I absolutely adored him by the end. THE RANGE. ❤️

(For streaming, I recommend Apple TV. It has the original Danish audio with English subtitles.)

Okay, so I did some digging and 10 days ago the local danish media reported that Thomas Vinterberg was working on a new feature film called Løgn (Lies), that received financing from the Danish Film Institute. It's being written with Anders Thomas Jensen (3 time nominee and 1 time Academy Award winner).

Out of all the Anders Thomas Jensen-directed movies I've seen (haven't seen Riders of Justice yet), The Last Viking might be the bleakest.

And still, somehow, after all the trauma the characters have been through, it ends on an uplifting note.

Anyone else a big fan of Anders Thomas Jensen? I started watching his films in large part because Mads Mikkelsen was a part of them, and I've been making my way through Mads Mikkelsen's filmography for a while now. Out of all the directors I've seen him work under, however, none have been more fascinating to me than Anders Thomas Jensen. The films are so weird and uncomfortable, but so heartfelt all the same? I think they're a little hard to understand, but they way they subvert genre and have this strong emphasis on masculine friendship and acceptance of one another's flaws is so powerful.

His best films, I think, are the new one, Den Sidste Viking (The Last Viking), and Retfaerdighedens Ryttere (Riders of Justice).
