HOMESHAKE @ The Echoplex (4/18/17) // Show Review

It was a Tuesday night when my dad and I walked into the Echoplex around 9 p.m. A white dude, barefoot and shirtless, was singing intensely on stage. His whole body was involved with it and every ounce of him was pulsating, from his toes (since he wasn’t wearing shoes) to his raised shoulders. To both of our pleasant surprise, it was actually quite good; the audience itself was into it too, probably thinking he’s the kind of guy they wouldn’t mind smoking a joint with.
As I ordered an IPA, in true Echo Park fashion, I reflected on how Andy Boay is not particularly the same mellow vibe as HOMESHAKE, but he certainly is the same alt energy. This curatorial choice by the Echoplex probed me with questions. Do you feature similar music in the opener before the main act, so you’re lubed up, or do you go for its stimulating antithesis sound so you’re pleasantly surprised? The Echoplex chose the later, which left us all impressionistically intrigued and pleasantly surprised.
Finally the part we’d been waiting for arrived: HOMESHAKE.
HOMESHAKE is the love project of Peter Sagar, occasionally joined by Mark Goetz, Greg Napier, and Brad Loughead. Growing up in the graylands of Alberta, Canada, Sagar later moved to Montreal, weaving in suburban soundscapes with upbeat tempos. Their debut album, In the Shower, masterfully captures what this must have been like, the perfect album for steamy showers and relaxing with the bros. HOMESHAKE released another record, Midnight Snack, the next year, marking his transition from working as Mac Demarco’s bassist to developing an individualistic, slow rally for wandering the streets stoned with your homies. His latest album, Fresh Air, is sleepy, lovey-dovey, and perfect for a daytime booty call.
The Echoplex was crowded with people who look like they used to be Mac Demarco fans but aren't now because he’s cool - retired Demarcos, if you will. This is all too ironic as Demarco himself was on the smoke deck outside the entire set, but I’m sure he was internally bobbing his head. Two disco balls hung over the audience, transfixing the audience into a slow lull, humming and bobbing along to Sagar and his side kicks.
Their live performance sounded identical to their albums. It’s incredible how you can close your eyes and meditate on this sound, and it’s just like being in your homie Josh’s backyard a few streets down in Echo Park, listening to HOMESHAKE. Still, of course, the real thing is always unbeatable.
