The dramatic/action-packed/edge-of-seat/heart-in-throat/vintagey/semi-romantic/bloody/kind of confusing Ghosts of Old Highways, a short film by Asheville-based musician Ben Lovett, made its online debut on IFC.com today. According to that website, "Ghosts of Old Highways was meant to be the next video in the series, but instead of crafting a video for the song, inspiration took hold. The project went from a song to a script, from a script to a film, from film to to a score and then from score back to a song. The result is a stunning short film crafted between Lovett, director Dan Bush, and a crew of ambitious, dedicated and determined volunteers willing to put up with extreme conditions for weeks in order to bring the film to light." It has guns and hatchets and lots of antique military uniforms. And a wedding, and a baptism, and lots of running. And a red-lit bordello scene with a band (including Andy Herod, Kevin Rumley and Brian McGee) in soldier attire. And a creepy chandelier. (It's kind of like the Appalachian Civil War-era version of Fight Club.) IFC.com also reports that “Ghost Of Old Highways has now screened in 18 cities, four countries, and won eight film festival awards in 2012 including Best Film, Best Score, and Best Cinematography and, most recently, a Best Soundtrack win at the Madrid International Film Festival." Lovett recently filmed a video for Black Curtain at the Masonic Temple. Read about that project here.
Hoot hoot with Electric Owls
Fuzzbox keyboard + vocal stacks have earned Electric Owls a comparison to MGMT, an observation found mostly on message boards and video comment threads. Listening to the rest of their folk-driven album Ain't Too Bright proves the claim superficial- their summery rock bears a likeness more so to Big Star or Department of Eagles. Electric Owls is Andy Herod of The Comas, as well as collaborative partners Jason Caperton, Matt Gentling of Band of Horses, and The Gutter Twins' Cully Symington. Featured track above is Magic Show. Enjoy :)
Electric Owls released the album on Vagrant Records.

Hope everybody had a wonderful holiday. Cheers!
