The thing with Rose is that she's a super awesome character, but somewhere in between s1 and 2 the narrative just gave out on her. Like s1 felt like Doctor Who, but s2 felt like a really forced romcom. She could have been so much more! Not to mention, like you said before, he treats Jackie and Mickey like shit, and Rose is super out of character to not call him out on that. As much as I love her, I can't talk about her bc so many of her fans like her the crappy way she was written.
Hello anechofromtomorrow!
How lovely to hear from you. And how annoying that you have to restrict how you talk about a favoured character. *hugs* You should be able to freely speak about this.
I have no idea what RTD was playing at when he changed Rose’s character so much in series 2, but it’s certainly p-ed off a lot of us; whilst others, as you say, became fervent fans of all that enforced mush. Some blame her becoming Bad Wolf; but the Doctor extracted all of that out of her head, so she should have returned to what she was before. Surely that’s the case?
Yes, I know RTD said their smugness was part of him dramatically pulling them down in the finale, but did he have to make Rose such a spoilt brat? To the point of extending that in series 4?! I was intrigued by her small appearances, but I can’t say that I cared any more about the character.
All I know is that he certainly did a good job of turning me off her - aided and abetted by the British media, of course. Perhaps he really did run out of ideas for her? I know that he originally wanted her back for the Tenth Doctor specials (thanks to RTD’s book), but continuing all that gooey romantic stuff would have had me switching off for good, I’m afraid.
Oh well, at least you can hold onto your happy memories of series 1, when she was at her best. I think a lot of us would love to do that, and I know a lot of the people on the comm I belong to prefer Rose in series 1; so perhaps you’ll be able to find somewhere similar. I do hope so. Good luck, love!
