I love working with Anergy, and this time the addition of their lovely vocalist Ash Vapor was a highlight. We crashed at an abandoned service center for about six hours on a very cold and very windy morning in November 2019. Originally the video was going to have a secondary location and an entire second set piece, but since that never worked out (and the song is short enough to where it kind of didn’t matter) we just stuck with this footage.
Gabe, the drummer and sort of de-facto leader of the band, is an old friend of mine from college. We actually met designing fake NASA missions for a class, back when both of us thought we wanted to be scientists. I helped them make their first video, Not My President, back in 2017...and since they had a new single coming out with Ash, they returned to me in 2019 for another collaboration. It’s always really easy to work with Gabe and the gang because they have such clear vision. I pretty much just have to show up and roll. About the only thing that was my spin is the whip-pan camera movement, inspired by Scott Pilgrim/Edgar Wright movies. Added a bit of fun and dynamics to what would otherwise be a pretty stagnant film setup.
