New #review From the Noblest Motives by @angelwritessf This is book 2 in the Variant Configurations series and I eagerly looked forward to it's publication after finishing the first (despite my review of the ARC being a tad late - sorry my friend!) THE PLOT THICKENS!!! From the Noblest Motives was just the right mix of spicy sex and spine-tingling adventure. The emotions of each character are palpable, as if you're right there experiencing it with them. Some of the issues from the first books become clearer, while new and interesting twists make themselves known. It does have a slight cliffhanger end, in that it leaves things wide open for the next book. New #review Rarely Pure & Never Simple by #AngelMartinez GAH, I can't believe I have to wait for the rest of the Variant Configurations series! I'm so impatient! 😂 This is usually why I try to read series that are complete first. 😉 But I love being an ARC reader for Mz. Martinez, so when this one was offered up, I couldn't turn it down. Because Rarely Pure & Never Simple is just that good. HOT DAMN, this book is spicy and it seriously sent me into palpitations at times! I also loved the darker, post-apocalyptic theme, with people who have been genetically modified or whose ancestors were so that now they have 'superpowers', aka the variants. Although it's sad to see that bog-standard humans continue to be shitty to those who are different and 'scary', even in this parallel far future... I love the relationship growing between Damien and Blaze, seeing them both start to open up to each other after being closed off for so long, albeit for different reasons. I can't wait to learn more about them in the next book and see where their dangerous yet oh so important job takes them this time. New #review: I had a hard time putting By Imperial Decree down, as is usual whenever I read a book by Angel Martinez. I loved the fact that a random quirk of fate brought these two virtual book club friends - who were already falling for each other's personality - face to face and gave them the opportunity to fall for each other for real. Marsh is a down-to-earth (no pun intended), disabled mechanic living on the space station that salvages Shiro's ship. He rescues Shiro, an Imperial prince/artist, who is fleeing from obsessive suitors (and maybe a little from his heavy obligations as a member of the Imperial family). They grow close in the little time they have together, especially after realizing that they actually sort of know each other already, before the stalker-suitors show up, causing all manner of chaos. I have said it before and I'll say it again: Angel Martinez builds the BEST worlds. The rich universe building in Gravitational Attraction is second only to her character development, as she once again brings entire new civilizations into realistic being for her readers. The book starts out right in the middle of an intense rescue mission and the action keeps up at a steady pace that doesn't become overwhelming. It's well-paired with moments of touching tenderness, recovery, and discovery that make it quite interesting overall. I fell in love with everything in this book, but Turk and Issac take the romantic cake. Turk's a menacing warrior-poet who's been exploited and risks being turned into a military weapon while Issac's a petite, damaged warrior who's was used up by the same forces and thrown away only to remake a life for himself, even if it wasn't the one he'd planned on.
