Rafayel had been working for months on his next collection, and not once had he allowed you to see it—not even a glimpse.
That made it even worse when you first saw it. There he was, standing quietly in an enormous room filled with paintings. “Go on, try to remember,” he said, his voice laden with a grief he refused to show.
The first canvas depicted children sitting opposite each other, tying their hands together with a small bow—a promise to find each other again. You smiled briefly; it was a lovely picture, yet you couldn’t quite place where you had seen it before.
You continued on to the next canvas, feeling Rafayel’s gaze on your back as he restrained himself from stepping in front of you. He held back every angry thought, every tear, every bit of pain you had caused him over the years. Knowing he couldn’t let it all out, when you passed the second painting—showing the children grown up but drifting apart—he couldn’t help but sigh in defeat.
The third painting caught your attention: a castle in a deserted landscape, with many locks and chambers, yet no human figure was visible. You stared in silence until, far in the painting, a man dressed in black entered the castle. “Wow, nice detail!” you joked as you turned to a red-eyed Rafayel, who was fixated on the floor. “Rafayel?” you asked gently, but before you could approach him, he firmly commanded, “Continue.”
The following canvases were small and filled with intricate details—blue fishes, his studio, sirens in the middle of the sea, a small boy sitting at his window—the list went on endlessly.
Or rather, what appeared to be you.
Dozens of portraits of a woman who looked just like you, yet whose eyes and hair were not your own. You stared in shock at the gaze of the person you once were, when suddenly Rafayel’s hand slipped into yours.
“No matter what, you will always be my beloved bride.”
