ALMOST - Kageyama haikyuu
♪ PLAYING ` let down - radiohead
You waited for him outside the gym, the winter air biting at your fingers even through your sleeves. Practice had run late again you could hear the squeak of shoes and the sharp echo of volleyballs through the doors. You told yourself you didn’t mind. You always told yourself that.
When the doors finally swung open, the team spilled out in a wave of laughter and steam. Kageyama was in the middle of them, head down, hair damp, muttering something about a set he wanted to redo tomorrow.
He didn’t see you at first.
He never saw you at first.
“Ah—Kageyama,” you called, lifting a hand.
He blinked, startled, like you’d appeared out of nowhere. “Oh. You’re still here.”
Still.
The word hit harder than it should have.
You forced a smile. “You said we could walk home together today.”
His expression flickered recognition, then guilt, then something like frustration at himself. “Right. I… forgot. Practice went long.”
“It’s okay,” you said automatically, even though it wasn’t. Even though you’d been replaying that promise all day like it meant something.
He shifted his bag on his shoulder. “I can walk you now.”
But the team was already calling him “Kageyama! We’re grabbing food!” and he hesitated. Just for a second. Just long enough.
You stepped back before he could decide. “It’s fine. Really. You should go with them.”
He frowned. “But I said—”
“It’s not a big deal,” you cut in, softer than you meant to. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
You didn't wait for his answer. You turned letting the cold swallow the heat in your face. Behind you, you heard him take a step like he might follow… then stop.
He didn’t call your name.
He didn’t run after you.
He just let you go.
And somehow, that hurt more than if he’d said nothing at all.
LUtober 2025 Day 22: Burden
Warriors has been feeling like a burden lately.
***
He could not stop messing up. It had started with a missed strike against a moblin that had led to Wild taking a terrible knock to the head. Warriors could still see his brother collapsing, boneless, to the ground, all because of his ineptitude. Then it had been striking Legend while within the throes of a nightmare, followed by getting in Wind’s way during their next battle, earning him a silent treatment that had lasted several days already. He had tried to help Wild cook to apologise, only to ruin dinner with too much monster extract. He had tried to apologise to Legend, only to receive a scoff and dismissive wave. Wind would not acknowledge him.
He had never meant to be the weak link in their chain, but that was what he had become. A burden, weighing them down, getting in their way.
He needed to do better, to be better.
Warriors stopped sleeping. The least he could do was take up more night shifts so those who contributed were well-rested, and the pats on the shoulder he earnt for his efforts helped lift the heaviness in his chest a little. But Wind still would not speak to him.
Warriors pushed himself to train harder. While they all enjoyed breakfast, he found a clearing nearby and went through his drills, over and over, until his palms bled and his muscles shook and he could no longer hold his sword. Then, he would wrap bandages around his hands, push himself to his feet, and return in time to pack up and leave. Wind smiled at him.
It still wasn’t enough. He fell in battle, and Sky had to protect him.
No matter how hard he tried, how hard he trained and pushed himself to be better, he would never be anything more than a burden. All his efforts, his work, it was never good enough; he was never good enough.
But Warriors could not give up. He would push himself until he broke, until he stopped making mistakes, until he could protect his group like he was meant to.
Until he stopped being a burden.

Accomplishment
Prompt: Accomplishment Rating: G Characters: Ratoa Sey (Hero of Tython)
Becoming a Jedi Knight was a great accomplishment. It was also an honour and promise of duty. A great responsibility and a burden. All of that symbolised by a lightsaber and a cut braid. Ratoa still had his. Even after all these years he carried it with him in a small wooden box.
These days it felt more of a mockery than anything else. He shouldn’t call himself a Jedi anymore. He had fallen. Left the Order. Snuck out in middle of the night. Sought out his sworn enemies. All of that just in hopes of destroying Vitiate. He had taken everything from him.
Ratoa picks the braid from the box. The burned edge reminding him of where Master Shan had cut it several years back. It seemed like a lifetime ago. Perhaps it was. The slippery braid falls from between his fingers. He buries his head in his hands, the box clattering on the floor.
Saving Tython, killing Vitiate. It all felt like it had been for nothing. Vititate was still alive. He had destroyed Ziost. It was only a matter of time before he did it again. Who knew what planet could be next. He hadn’t been able to stop Ziost. He didn’t how to stop whatever would happen next.
The Sith seemed almost as clueless as he was. Or they didn’t trust him with the information. He had thrown everything he had achieved away and they couldn’t even trust him with what little they knew.
He was so tired and exhausted. All he wanted was to sleep.
