fucking. other point on the conflation of fucking everything with the holocaust: you paper over SO MANY OTHER FUCKING GENOCIDES that way. fuckin. The holodomor was not the "ukranian holocaust", the armenian genocide was not the "armenian holocaust," the rwandan genocide was not the "rwandan holocaust", the serbian genocide was not the "serbian holocaust". it is vitally important, if you aim to actually know when genocides are happening, and to try and stop them from happening, that you can call these things what they are, even when their mechanics of genocide are not, like, fucking. gas chambers and work camps.

Denial of food and resources (coughs in "the holodomor and the irish potato famines") can be a tactic of genocide. Forcible education of children and reeducation (coughs in "residential schools in the americas") can be a tactic of genocide. Rape can be a tactic of genocide. Vigilante justice can be a tactic of genocide. Relocation can be a tactic of genocide. it's not all "go to this work camp and be treated like an animal until you drop to the ground dead". Genocide takes many forms and we NEED to be able to recognize all of them, not just shoehorn them all under the title of "holocaust" and ignore anything that doesn't fit our schema of what the holocaust was while pretending that anything that wasn't as incredibly impactful to the overall groups affected* as the holocaust is on the exact same level as something that wiped out approximately 50-90% of the Jews living in the Slavic nations, Germany, Hungary, and the Baltic state, and that anything more impactful wasn't actually "that bad".

*All genocides are terrible. Some have more of an effect on the cultures involved than others. Some have historically been successful, which is a greater tragedy than can literally ever be put into words. Others cause less significant damage to the targeted cultures. Anything closer to living memory will be more important to fight back against the erasure of, as well as have a more current effect on the culture of the survivors. It is important to consider each one as their own events because they fucking are. i know someone is gonna get mad at me for this phrasing but i haven't got anything better, and also like, fuck you, honestly, the insistences on "the holocaust was THE WORST genocide ever" and "the holocaust was Actually not Half as bad as [insert other genocide well out of living memory here]" are both bad. and you should feel bad for engaging in either
