A glare in his old friend’s direction accompanies the emphasis he places on that last word. Nevertheless, she stands up to give his elbow a reassuring grasp.

“Even if it would end more than the inquiry against me? Ani, if he flat out admits what he’s doing — why he’s doing it — he’ll expose his own pattern of abuse. Not just with me, but anyone else he’s ever silenced.”
