Debunking the “gratitude only” theory in Aqua & Akane’s story
In Oshi no Ko, where lies often masquerade as truth and every emotion is filtered through the lenses of performance and survival, love is never simple. Especially when it comes to Aqua Hoshino — a boy who carries the weight of two lives, the trauma of a murdered mother, and a vendetta that devoured his youth.
That’s why some fans struggle to read Aqua’s final decision — his wish to have a relationship with Akane again — as anything other than obligation.
“He’s just grateful to her.”
“He only said that because she supported him.”
“It’s not real love.”
But that reading misses something fundamental, both in how Oshi no Ko constructs romantic dynamics and how Japanese media (and human psychology) often treats gratitude as a very real, very powerful seed of romantic affection.
Let’s break it down.
"It’s just gratitude” — Why that argument falls apart
Let’s be clear: Aqua and Akane weren’t “just friends.”
They dated. They kissed. Aqua confided in her more than anyone else. He told her he didn’t want to leave her — and yet he did, choosing vengeance over peace.
That choice haunted him.
During the final confrontation with his father, he reflects on the people he hurt, the ones he loved, the paths he didn’t take. He thinks of responding to Kana’s feelings — but it’s Akane with whom he says he wants to be with again.
Some fans argue that he only wanted to thank her. But thanking someone doesn’t require you to restart a relationship, especially not when that relationship had romantic, emotional, and physical depth.
To say it’s “just gratitude” is to ignore the text. The story doesn’t paint Akane as a rebound, or a placeholder — it positions her as the only person with whom Aqua had that kind of intimacy and romantic experience.
Anime couples rooted in gratitude — and why that’s valid
In Japanese storytelling, gratitude often is part of love. It’s not unusual for relationships to begin with a sense of appreciation — someone saved you, helped you, saw you — and gradually that appreciation deepens into something enduring.
The argument that “gratitude isn’t love” falls flat when we look at how many iconic anime couples begin with that very feeling — and grow beyond it.
Tohru and Kyo (Fruits Basket): Kyo is the first person to make Tohru feel truly wanted after years of being passed around like an afterthought. Her gratitude blossoms into something profound.
Violet and Gilbert (Violet Evergarden): Violet’s emotional awakening begins as gratitude toward Gilbert for giving her purpose, but evolves into deep love.
Kousei and Kaori (Your Lie in April): Kaori reignites Kousei’s passion for music. At first, he’s thankful. Then, he falls in love.
Tristan and Isolde (Four Knights of the Apocalypse): While Tristan heals Isolde from a mortal wound she received for his sake, he quite literally screams that he wants to repay her for everything she has done for him. Then, the next moment, he happily kisses her when she opens her eyes. Wow, will you look at that?! Being in love with someone and feeling gratitude toward them is possible after all! (Don't tell toxic Kana fans, they'd probably have a meltdown).
So when those toxic fans say that Aqua didn't mean to get back into a romantic relationship with Akane because what he felt was gratitude towards her.… they’re ignoring how love often works in reality and in storytelling.
Gratitude can be love, if it leads to choice
Gratitude is real. But it’s not a placeholder. It’s not a consolation prize. And in Oshi no Ko, it isn’t the only reason Aqua wishes to be with Akane again.
She doesn’t exist to magically heal Aqua. In fact, much of her arc challenges him.
She’s the person who makes him face the things he has chosen to ignore (like how Ai's idol facade was … well, a facade).
She confronts his choices and refuses to be deceived.
She doesn’t offer comfort alone — she demands truth.
Their bond was built over time — through conflict, vulnerability, and care. Aqua trusted her with truths he wouldn’t give anyone else.
So when he thinks of having a relationship with her again, it’s not about owing her something.
It’s about wanting something real.
Call that gratitude, if you want.
But don’t forget to call it love, too.
