i genuinely can't express just how lame this was. the author can't even commit to blinding a side character. not even killing. it was literally supposed to be a sacrifice but the impact of it is gone because the author is a coward. i will be mad about this forever. there's bad writing and there's almost making something really cool but chickening out of it at the last second. it could've been so cool!!!!!!! it was such an awesome scene but then this had to happen because the author is so afraid of letting a side character sacrifice his vision!!!! not even his life!!! the sacrifice meant nothing anymore!!!!! like genuinely i will never get over how lame that was. it made me completely stop believing in the chance anything bad could happen to anyone who matters even slightly in this manga. like. i usually don't give much of a fuck about writing quality as long as i'm enjoying stuff. but this. genuinely what the fuck was the author thinking.

Boruto asks Sarada specifically not to lose hope because three years ago, she gave him the chance to hold on by sending Sasuke to his aid. If Sasuke hadn't been there for Boruto, the future Momoshiki envisioned would likely have come true.

Mitsuki & Boruto and thoughts about true love

Opening this up to the SNS community to discuss, but I can’t help but draw parallels on a certain chat between Eida and Mitsuki in chapter 8 of BTBV.

From the start of Boruto Next Gen, Kishimoto established a pseudo SNS dynamic with these two characters, where Orochimaru, who’s clearly still not over Sasuke, and is very aware of the duality between them, purposely pairs Mitsuki (moon) with Boruto (Sun).

And in chapter 7, Boruto calls it out to Mitsuki who’s memory has been altered and thinks his sun is now Kawaki. A sweet gesture from him who’s aware and accepting of Mitsuki’s feelings towards him.

He also gives him encouragement to stand on his own and step out of the shadow of his Sun. He doesn’t need to hide who he is, but if he’s not ready, Boruto, his sun, will continue to accept and illuminate him.

Then in chapter 8, Mitsuki talks with Eida about his interaction with Boruto and how for some time he’s known Kawaki ain’t the one. Especially thanks to Eida’s power which makes everyone fall in love with her, he’s been able to understand what love is supposed to feel like, making it clear in his head there’s something not right. He’s never really questioned his wants and needs before, happy to just have a sun that would accept and affirm him. That was enough for him, he didn’t have to understand where it came from or why he felt it. But now the shine is gone, he can’t help but question the validity of those feelings.

He now understands that unless he can be himself and stand by it, he could easily lose sight of who is his most important person, fall for a ‘false sun’. He also makes an interesting remark that even though he’s felt like this for some time, he was also afraid to lose what he had, however unsatisfying, and so he never questioned if his sun was even real or not.

And then, Eida makes a great point (btw, I’d love it if anyone has the Japanese translation of this whole interaction) where she says "we’re talking about love yeah?”

Side note - I do appreciate that she’s used as the audience throughout the story to question the meaning behind what characters say.

So, when you go back to the top, from the conversation with Boruto to Eida’s comment, Mitsuki has been questioning if his love for Kawaki is true or not, because despite the memory wipe and the fake memories, in his heart, he knows who is his true love.

And considering their SNS undertones, I can’t help but also think of that one tiny, insignificant, with no lasting consequences love that was guilt tripped, faked and forced via a genjutsu...(cough) The Last (cough) and wonder if Kishimoto was being petty once more (or perhaps planting the seeds) and whether Naruto in time, also reached the same conclusion as Mitsuki, in that, you can’t force yourself to love someone who isn’t your true love and maybe, being honest with oneself should come first.

The more this Manga goes on, the more it feels like a vehicle to confirm a lot of the SNS subtext in Naruto outside of Naruto and Sasuke themselves.

Sadly, it’s months of crap and then one good themed episode drops, but hey, we take what we can get.
