English botanist and cyanotype photographer Anna Atkins was born on this date (3/16) in 1799. Her self-published 1843 book, “Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions”, is considered the first book of any sort to use photographic illustrations. (The cyanotype process resulted in a blue-hued image, and is used in blueprints.) Some historians believe she may have been the first woman photographer. A true scientific, photographic, and publishing pioneer.
