Random Dodger Headcanon - Dodger was really sick when he was a child, at least when he was a baby
One thing that keeps bothering me is that Hollyoaks never expanded on why Anna only took Dodger when she left Patrick, but specifically why Patrick believed her about him being dead. I wish that was expanded on more because Patrick seems like the type to need evidence in order to believe anything anyone tells him, especially the wife he was abusing. So I started thinking of reasons why he would believe it. If Dodger was already really sick, it wouldn't be a huge stretch for him to believe he didn't make it. I just can't buy that Patrick would believe his son just suddenly dropped dead without questioning everything
Now, we move on to how that plays into why Anna only took him away and not both of them. Realistically, escaping an abusive man like Patrick would be difficult, especially trying to get two children away in the process. It would not be easy. Especially getting Sienna away because Sienne, in this headcanon, is healthy, and therefore, she'd have to sneak her out of the house. We know that Patrick was abusive towards Anna & Sienna (although I do believe Patrick got worse after Anna left him and Dodger "died"). Anna ran away with Didger because of how fragile he already was, and she knew he wouldn't survive Patrick's abuse, but Sienna "could"
Also, it adds a really interesting dynamic with Dirk because he would've been there. He might not be Dodgers biological father, but that's his dad. He's earned that title. Sure, Dodger didn't know, but even after he did, Dirk was still who he considered to be his dad. It adds this really sweet dynamic because Dirk would've been right by his and Anna's side the entire time. He had to have known something about Patrick (I don't remember), maybe not his name or who or where he was, but he likely knew that Anna fled an abusive relationship or something because he everyone thought he was dodgers biological father and he likely never corrected them. It's adds a lot to their dynamic
I'm bad at explaining things, so I hope you understand what I mean to say. I'm probably overthinking what is likely just a plot hole, but it was bothering me. Plus, it's Dodger related, so I thought you'd like it
You’re not bad at explaining things at all, I struggle so much trying to explain my headcanons, so I totally understand (and there is no overthinking in the HO fandom, we have to fill those plot holes somehow!)
This is a plausible headcanon, and honestly, I’m gonna choose to believe it because I don’t even think there’s anything in canon to dispute it? From what I can remember, here are all the facts we DO know:
1. Anna had a one-night stand with Jeremy that resulted in her getting pregnant with Dodger and Sienna
2. She led everyone to believe they were Patrick’s when they were born in Dec 1986
3. Patrick was abusive
4. Anna tried to kill Dodger and Sienna when they were babies in a murder/suicide
5. Anna fled with Dodger in 1987
6. Anna told Patrick Dodger was dead
7. Patrick got Anna sectioned in 1997
SO. It does then lead us to the question of WHY Patrick believed Anna about Dodger being dead. I think your theory about Dodger being a sick child makes sense, and it sort of parallels in an opposite sort of way with Sophie and Sebastian’s birth what with Warren running off with Sophie because Sebastian was too sick to leave the hospital.
Another theory could be that Patrick believed Anna had killed Dodger, hence part of the reason he got her sectioned?
But I really like the idea, as you said, of Dirk being there. He meets Anna, who was fleeing an abusive relationship (which he did know about), and she has this sick little baby, and Dirk is just immediately attached. Sick child or not though, I completely agree, Dirk is Dodger’s dad through and through, nothing can change that (which is also why I’m so devasted that Dirk died when Dodger wasn’t even in the village??). But Dodger being a sick child would add to their dynamic for sure; Dirk would’ve nurtured that boy back to health! It would also add to how protective he can be of Dodger!
As you can see, I’m also a chronic overthinker when it comes to things like this, but it’s just so much fun; and what else are we supposed to do with plot holes? If I’ve said anything that isn’t quite right or forgotten a canon detail, please let me know!
(P.s. it makes me so happy that you had a Dodger headcanon and thought to tell me, I’m always happy to talk about Dodger (or anything!) <3)
I'd only watched post-2015 hollyoaks so I had no idea who dodger was when he was re-introduced, but I liked his character so I went back and watched his old storylines and holy fuck this man's life is insane. Why are his siblings so obsessed with him, why is his entire family evil, why does he keep getting locked up??
Oh my god, I know, it’s wild. Admittedly, before Dodger returned, I’d only watched his scenes in 2012 and part of 2013, so I’m now watching 2011 and will pick up where I left off in 2013 to see the rest of his storylines, but reading up on all of it is actually crazy. This man has lived too many lives. His siblings are SO obsessed with him, Liberty might be the only one with a normal relationship with him (don’t quote me on that, I don’t know if shes done anything weird towards Dodger yet) 😭 His entire bio family being evil while he’s just there trying to hold it together is so funny, he really is the peacekeeper. I mean:
Jez (bio dad): Mental serial killer
Patrick (bio uncle/assumed father): Abusive piece of shit
Sienna (twin sister): unhealthy incestuous obsession with him (plus all the scheming, hostage taking, stabbing, attempted murders)
Will (brother): resents him, killed the love of Dodger’s life after pretending she’d put him in a wheelchair (and all the other crazy shit)
Nico (daughter — with his twin sister, might I add): crazy serial killer who once stabbed her mum (and some other crimes)
And then the lesser crimes, but still kind of fucked up:
Martha (gran): covered up Jez’s murders
Liberty (sister): slept with Jez
Anna (mum): tried to kill him and Sienna as babies but there were other factors involved in that
Dilly (cousin): sort of accidentally killed her husband while trying to ruin Sienna’s life??
And I think Dirk is genuinely innocent, which is hilarious and makes perfect sense because he doesn’t have any of the Blake genes.
AND THAT DOESN’T EVEN SCRATCH THE SURFACE OF THE BLAKE-SAVAGES! THERE ARE A TON MORE CRIMES! Now I’m just waiting for Tori to turn out to be a Mini Nico 👀
But also yeah, can we stop taking Dodger hostage?? I know it’s a family tradition and all, but give the man some freedom, please!
Random thing I just needed to get off my chest
Do Hollyoaks ever give any details as to what Anna Blake was actually like as a mother to Dodger when he was growing up?
We know Patrick had her sectioned when Dodger was 11. In order to have someone sectioned (as far as I'm aware), need to be a risk of harm to themselves or others. We know Anna tried to kill herself, Dodger & Sienna when Dodger & Sienna were babies. Is that how Patrick had her sectioned? If so, why didn't Patrick have her sectioned then? What's the time gap between that happening and her running off with Dodger?
Also, what was her mental health like during the time between her leaving Patrick and her being sectioned? I struggle to believe that she went from trying to kill herself and her children to being fine just because she got away?
What was her relationship like with Dodger before Patrick had her sectioned? Is that ever expanded on? Obviously, Dodger loves her, but that doesn't really expand on much because he was 11, and she's his mum.
Sorry for the ramble, I just have questions that I don't think are answered in the show and needed to get them off my chest
No need to apologise for the ramble - you know I love a lengthy discussion! That being said, I don't think I actually have many answers. If Hollyoaks ever expanded on all of this, it has completely slipped my mind or I haven't seen it yet. (I also hate they retconned Sienna and Dodger's birthday in this case, because Dodger initially said he was 7 when his mum "left" but after they changed the birth year, suddenly he was actually 10.)
I can only say that I assume the reason Patrick had Anna sectioned was because she had told him Dodger was dead, and he probably thought she had something to do with it based on her previous attempt to kill him, Sienna, and herself. However, I don't actually know that that is the reason stated in canon. I think they just sort of say he got her sectioned to stop her from outing his abuse, and I don't know how he managed to get away with that in that case, unless he used Dodger supposedly being dead. All we know about the time gap is that Anna attempted to kill the twins + herself before the twins were 1 (the twins' birth years were retconned to 1986, and it says she ran away with Dodger in 1987), and then she was sectioned in 1997.
I would love to know if anyone does have any canonical answers to these questions, because I've only just gotten to the point of Dodger talking about Anna "leaving" in my rewatch, and I don't remember a whole lot.
HOLD UP
So... after blaming his abusive behavior on his mommy being mean to him
NOW Patrick claims he was abusive because he was hiding the fact that his kids boned?!
Anna told me to ask what his excuse was when he first married her...
BEFORE the kids were born?
"You took that hope away."
I swear to God if Will dies in Hollyoaks and doesn't pay for what he did to Texas, Anna and (technically) Ash, then hell will break loose.
