The Worst Princess
This is a childrens picture book written by Anna Kemp with lovely illustrations by Sara Ogilvie. The worst princess is a princess named Sue who waits 100 years in her castle becoming super bored, waiting for a prince to come by to lead her to a life of fun and excitement. Eventually a prince does turn up! But he turns out not to be what Sue has hoped for, wanting her to stay in his castle and wear pretty dresses and to leave the armour and the dragon slaying to men like him. Sue outraged befriends a fearsome looking dragon over tea, as she explains her predicament the dragon decides to do something about it and blows the castle away. Sue's long hair is now short and her dress ruined as she finds herself in the garden the tower now gone. The prince demands to know what happened calling Sue the worst princess ever. The princess now liberated runs off with her new friend the dragon and they tourn the land all over getting into mischief, Sue wears armour and sorts out all those pesky princes and lives happily ever after.
The story is full of humour and is a nice twist on the classical princess story. It's nice to see Sue who wears trainers and plays with a yoyo and has an adventurous streak to her who wants to see the world and wear armour be the protagonist of a childrens story. The princes compared to her are pompous and cowardly and pale next to Sue's big personailty. I think its a nice example and allows girls and boys to enjoy a fun and inspirational princess.
The text is lyrical and rhymes which gives it a good rhythm and is memorable when reading aloud. The illustrations are fun and energetic with bright cheerful colours and loose playful lines. The use of pattern and different mark making textures also works really well. on top of paint there's pen lines and pencil textures. chalk or pastel looks like its used for dust churned up by the princes horse's hooves and scribbled pencil on the princesses suitcase gives it a worn effect. Watercolour washes hint at background scenes such as plants and sky which works against the colourfully bold and patterned pictures. At some points it even looks as if bubble wrap may have been used to create patterns. It is an interesting array of different drawing styles and it really works together to make the images rich. I also love it in picture books when they have little things going off in the picture that you can spot, like the alligator in the moat or the snail with a tea cup on its back. This book is fun and charming and the use of mixed media in the illustrations is inspiring and lovely to behold.
