Dutch Gold – Amber Arcades live Upstairs in Whelans, Sunday 17th September 2017
Having barely survived a nerve-racking afternoon in Croke Park watching Dublin go 3-in-a-row there was a danger that the Amber Arcades gig could be a bit of anti-climax. Things didn’t bode well when I entered the intimate upstairs venue in Whelans during the penultimate song of support act Fin Divilly’s set, only to find about 20 people there before me. By the time Annelotte and her three male bandmates took to the stage the crowd was still looking a bit sparse. It didn’t seem to faze them one bit and after the restrained opener of Constant’s Dream it was dizzying indie rock all the way. Right Now turned epic by the end of its four minutes and Come with Me was positively jaunty.
After settling in Annetotte proceeded to tell us about her previous time in Ireland as a three-year old when her parents moved to a hippie commune near Galway for a few months. Her and the band were particularly curious about the All-Ireland Final which they had seen on the ferry. Not being familiar with the setup they figured the two teams where Up The Dubs and the Mayonnaise. Hilarious.
I didn’t catch the name of the lead guitarist but he was insouciantly brilliant and able to move from the indie riffs of Fading Lines to the aching slide of Apophenia without batting an eyelid. If Amber Arcades’ debut album Fading Lines was pretty good then the recent EP Cannonball is out of this world. With its arpeggiated guitar riff and driving backbeat opening track Which Will is barely recognisable as a Nick Drake song, and was just pure, sweet indie pop. They broke out the synth and the electronic drums for the aching Can’t Say That We Tried but it was back to the stomping sing-along pop for It Changes, arguably the best song they have done to date.
Which such a small venue they abandoned any pretence of an encore and instead blew our minds with What a Heart Can Contain from her pre-Heavenly Records Patiently EP. Before departing Annelotte told us they were off to LA next week to record their next record. It the upward arc in quality continues it should be out of this world. The night ended with bass-driven motorik epic Turning Light. It was the icing on the cake to an already great day. Some of the drunken Mayo fans would have been better of checking them out than drowning their sorrows next door in Ryans. Up The Dubs!
