Defining what is described today as “the golden age of fashion photography,” American photographers of the 1940s and 50s—Richard Avedon, Louise Dahl-Wolfe and Gordon Parks to name a few—captured models posing in the famed environments of Paris, including Place de la Concorde, the Musée du Louvre, and the Palace of Versailles. Photographed for Harper’s Bazaar, LIFE, and Vogue, many of these images introduced American readers to the newest @dior creations, and emphasized that the fantasies of fashion could actually become one’s own wardrobe. In the following decades, Burt Stern would photograph Marilyn Monroe, Herb Ritts would photograph Kim Basinger, Annie Leibowitz would photograph Kate Moss, and Tyler Mitchell would photograph Naomi Campbell – movie and runway stars wearing Dior clothes, accessories and makeup would further amplify the visual fantasies in print.
