Snufkin: I’m a loner. I don’t like being tied down to any one place or any one person.
Me, gay: Oh okay.
Me: *gives him 35 children*
Sisu (1952)
Sisu only exists in an AU no matter how much I love them. Basically in 1951-52, right after the ends of Moominvalley in November, Snufkin has a rebound fling with a tulippen and ends up pregnant. He Immediately leaves upon realizing this and takes herbs to get an abortion. In the main timeline, this goes safely and smoothly and everything’s good. But this is AU land and these herbs are not always effective, especially not at later gestational ages and mymble pregnancies develop quickly. Snufkin basically hides away in the forests of Switzerland and gives birth alone in a cave and he is Very lucky no one got hurt or worse.
Snufkin, poor thing, is only 19 and has no support system. It’s incredibly difficult to look after an infant (I say, also 19, never having watched a child in my life), much less alone. He takes very bad care of himself and is Not ready to have a child but there’s no way he’s going to leave this baby in a foundling house so he’s doing his very best to give them a good life. He’s absolutely terrified of losing them like he was lost so he doesn’t let them out of his sight for years.
When Sisu is two, Snufkin has a near-death experience and realizes that if something were to happen to him, Sisu would be all alone. He braves the way back to Moominvalley for the first time in about three years, trying to get to Alicia. He still thinks the Moomins are gone. They are not and he is Very Surprised.
Sisu has really bad separation anxiety when they’re little—they’ve never been apart from Snufkin, who always needed to watch them. They recover with the help of the Moomins.
Sisu is, in a word, feral. They live in a woods for their first two years and every winter. They hunt. They bite. They detest baths and Will fight you. Sisu once smashed in a window because they wanted some fresh air. Snufkin refuses to acknowledge that they can do any wrong.

Inge (1959)
A few years after Snufkin and Moomintroll get together in 1955, Snufkin gets pregnant—this is the Ginger Tea series. Inge takes his sweet time and bakes for 14 months. He was Warm and Cozy and did Not want to get up. When he comes out, he is the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, but it’s easily reduced and he’s just fine.
Inge is an otter boy. Well, he’s an otter demiboy. He’s got webbed paws and thick, waterproof fur, and can Zoom around in the water. He’s not allowed to swim in the ocean until he’s like twelve, for fear that he’ll get out too far and be swept away. Also you know how otters hold hands while they sleep so they don’t drift apart? Inge Must be held while he falls asleep, and that’s the routine every night until he’s eleven and his dads get too busy. He gets a weighted blanket to help him.
Inge inherited Snufkin’s bad leg and the pain that comes from that, though he was lucky and didn’t get any GI issues.
He loves stacking and organizing small things; he’s got some Muddler tendencies. Don’t bother trying to help, though. Alicia is the only person who can understand his seemingly arbitrary systems.
He also has a favorite rock and carries it in a fanny pack everywhere he goes. He isn’t shy to introduce himself to others and just like his Isä, he is garbage at greetings. He just shows people his rock.
Inge’s good opinion once lost is lost forever.
Annikki (1961)
Annikki was a complete surprise; Snufkin didn’t know he was having her until she was on her way out. It was Not a pleasant experience. She has a pretty difficult birth and as a result has hypertonic right hemispheric cerebral palsy. This means the left side of her body has is very stiff and rigid with heightened muscle tone, giving her difficulty with fine motor skills on that side and gross motor skills all around. Her family does their best to manage her symptoms, but they don’t exactly have access to brain scans and physical and occupational therapy and the like; ain’t that just the way. Annikki was assigned male at birth, but the moment Snufkin heard the baby referred to as “his son,” he was like, “Hmm I don’t like those vibes” and raises them gender neutral (as he does with Sisu). When she tells her dads she’s a girl, Snufkin has to resist gloating about how he totally called it.
Annikki is very much a joxter: a lazy housecat with a penchant for mischief. She knocks things over for fun. She scratches all the furniture. She’s very purry. I love her. She has a real knack for languages like Snufkin, but she’s skilled at reading and writing in them, while Snufkin is best at speaking and listening them.
Annikki has an eight foot vertical leap.
Varja and Linnéa (1971)
Varja and Linnéa are twins, as is more common in geriatric pregnancy (in humans, pregnancy at 35 or older). Varja came out first, as he insists on letting everyone know. He really inherited his Isä’s love of travel and the world and ends up leaving home pretty early as a result. He sends letters and postcards and finds a career as a photographer, using his art to advocate for environmental conservation all across Europe. Snufkin is proud of his son but don’t understand why he needs to have a job. Moomintroll hangs his work up all over their house.
Linnéa, born Terho, is the homebody of the two. She loves staying inside and writing novels and plays, which she gets her siblings to act out with her à la Little Women. Snorkmaiden, a writer herself, is something of a mentor to Linnéa.
Being home frequently, Linnéa ends up being the one who helps Annikki with her ADLs (actions of daily living) such as changing and bathing. The girls become very close, bonding over their shared time together and also over being trans. Annikki has a wanderer’s spirit but isn’t able to travel alone or for long distances, and somewhat resents her brother Varja for being able to go wherever the wind takes him, but it’s easier for her to bear when she can take care of Linnéa.
Linnéa becomes a C-list novelist with Annikki as her translator. They go on small journeys together for public appearances and the like. When Snufkin goes on his travels, he buys every single one of her books. Moomintroll reads them aloud. Snufkin’s eyesight sucks. It’s tender.
