I incurred my first dirty needle stick!!!!
Before this time, I'd never actually stuck myself with a needle. My clean streak ended in AMU. I have a skillful artistry in handling sharps but yah might not be my day.
My patient was medically fit for discharge but jus cus I am a super nurse, I extended a litol help in giving her the last insulin injection. The next thing I know I felt a sharp twinge in my left middle finger. Lyk wtf. I know it's solely my fault but while I was doing the injection the nurse in charge was like do this, fax this, print this and call the district nurse and bla bla bla so I was rushing to get things done and boom injured myself. Petty. So it's also her fault ok!
Torn between keeping it a secret vs my own safety. So I decided to be honest and told my superiors about it. I've been milking the wound like a blood drive phlebotomist checking your hemoglobin while rinsing it with water. Was told to go to emergency department as a hospital protocol and get some blood tests.
As my memory confirms, the patient was admitted cus of AKI. For her history, she's got hypertension and nothing extraordinary that I shud be worried about if you knw what I mean. But despite this, I still admitted myself in Acute and Emergency department jus to get things done the right way. I was asked to wait for the triage nurse to call my name and I was lyk, is there no priority lane for me? I was wearing the hospital's uniform and it be awkward to wait along with all other patients and I got some other patients left in the ward so I need this done ASAP. I waited anyway.
After ILS training, whenever I am in public, I've been imagining someone havig a cardiac arrest in front of me and whether or not I'd be able to handle it gracefully. And then I heard a loud B-O-O-M!!!!!!! Found a patient lying on the floor, I ran towards the patient and asked him, "Sir,sir, sir are you okay?" and good thing he answered right away - he was not unconscious THANK GOD! And then came some of the emergency department staffs to help. It was like adrenaline rush and I cudn't even believe that my body's reaction was that fast. Then, I heard my name - it's from the TRIAGE nurse.
She was looking at me lyk what happened you stupid brat. Cudn't agree more, it's the stupidest thing to get yourself injured with a dirty needle. Whenever there is a dirty needle stick, the potential donor's and the stuck person's blood are sent for testing. This information is used both to treat or reassure the stuck employee and to establish a record of serotype. So my blood was sent, and unfortunately, I told the doctor that the patient might no longer be around as we speak cus she's oredi going home. So he went on reassuring me that it was a low risk of anything but decided to give me a hepatitis vaccine.
And yah, here I am nao, suffering from that vaccine. It made my left arm numb and I cudn't raise it. The site has become so red it is probly normal. I hope everything's fine.
