hello!! I recently got an offer for an internship at an established mnc, and I'm really excited for it! However, I'm a little shy and can be stuck in my own world giving a 'bored look' if not approached. I'm also a bit sensitive when it comes to sharing things during company bonding as I'm uncomfortable in new environments! Any tips on how to be more approachable and give a great vibe to colleagues and higher ups etc? I would love to be a brighter person in the new place. Thank you :-)
Hi there! Congratulations on your new internship!
It’s important to be yourself, and feel confident in who you are. But it’s also great that you really want to make a good impression, and show your colleagues the best sides of you.
Some advice that sounds a little funny, but actually works, is to “fake it until you make it”. So in other words, if you act very outgoing and confident, soon you will start to feel more comfortable in the environment and can actually become those things.
Something that may help, is to pretend like you’ve known these people for a long time. Tell yourself that they’re old friends of yours, and you’re so excited to see them! Take deep breaths if you get overwhelmed, and try to keep your muscles relaxed - this will help with your body language - if you appear to be more calm/open, you’ll seem more approachable.
As far as actually interacting with people, it is cliché, but be yourself! Ask the person about themselves, or give them a compliment. This shows them that you’re interested in getting to know them better.
And lastly, try not to overthink it. You’ve been given this opportunity because the company thinks you’re a great match. You already fit in, just by being accepted into the program!
I hope you have a fun and enriching experience while working! Take care~
