Just Like Us Pt. 2
Lou spotted one of the ragdolls being shoved toward recycling. The robots had contained them into a line leading all the way into the pipe. Of course, all of the pink doll's friends were near the front--the leaders of this ragtag army. He stopped Moxy short and leaned down close to whisper, "How good is your acting?"
"Not to brag, but I'm kinda a professional." She hadn't lost much of her pep.
He rolled his eyes, "Cry."
"Huh?"
"Cry. Make it seem real. We need to get through these robots."
She blinked a few times before suddenly trying to yank her wrist out of his hold. "Help!" He fumbled forward in surprise at the outburst, quickly realizing she was doing what he'd told her to. Regaining a stoic face, he pulled her toward the pipe, down the line of UglyDolls. "Someone! Please! Lou don't do this! We don't deserve this!"
All the dolls watched him with glares that might as well have been death threats. He held little to no remorse for them. They had come too close to ruining his entire life -- and ruining his life seemed hard to do, in his eyes. It was already terrible. Once he got toward the front of the line, those glares mixed with the petrified faces of her friends. They looked between Lou and Moxy, desperate to save her but knowing the robots would indeed attack if they moved.
Their faces didn't matter to him. His eyes barely glanced at Ox, who was at the very front of the line, seeing the devastation in every stitch of his face. Lou forced himself to face forward again. Moxy continued tugging and screaming for him to change his mind. He had to hand it to her; she definitely made it believable.
The robots registered his approach, eyes flashing as they scanned him. He stood upright before them, Moxy's wrist still clutched tightly. "Let me pass. I'll handle the extermination from here." Their eyes flashed again, and they wheeled back. He waited silently until they disappeared back toward his mansion, keeping an eye on them out of his peripheral.
Ox tried to appear angry. Spiteful. Something other than wholly shattered. "Deja Vu," he spoke bitterly.
Lou stared him down, expressionless save for the way his mouth pulled down into a frown and the slight narrowing of his eyes. He let go of Moxy's wrist, and she stood beside him to wait for his next course of action. The other Uglies glanced between the two. Lou kneeled down, taking Moxy's hand and placing a key in her palm. "There's a sealed vault at the end of the pipe. I had the robots block the way to Uglyville. This will unlock it." He pushed her fingers to wrap over the key, looking into her eyes. "I'll reprogram them to forget about your location in Uglyville. It'll be as if you never came here."
She stared down at his hands over hers, "So...that's it? Everything we did...was still for nothing? We still don't get a kid?" She met his eyes again.
"It's all I can give you," Lou squeezed her hand before letting go. "Not everyone gets their happy ending." He looked down at the floor.
"I'm not gonna stop trying, you know," Moxy stared at him determinedly.
Lou shook his head, "You have to. Moxy, listen to me: you can't come back here. Both of us die if you do. Those robots will report me the second they find out I let you live...and it'll be recycling for the both of us. So, do us both a favor and just...let it go. You get to do whatever you want in Uglyville. No rules. No expectations. Don't give all of that up by coming back here."
Moxy's eyes watered. She looked back down at her hand with the key clasped securely inside. A small, weak smile played on her lips, "A lot different from the first time you told me to leave."
He gave a short laugh, looking down, "Yeah, well, insults don't seem to work on you. A part of me doubts that this will, too."
"It won't."
"Moxy-"
"I'm coming back." Her tone was final despite the look he was giving her. "And I won't be leaving next time without you. We're both leaving this place, Lou."
He shook his head, sighing in frustration, "I can't do that."
"That's why I'm coming back; to help you."
"No, Moxy, you don't understand-"
He was cut short when she tackled him in a hug. She tightly wrapped her arms around his neck, "I'm coming back. And just like before, there's nothing you can do to stop me."
Lou's eyes were wide from the contact. When was the last time he'd hugged someone? His arms were held out unsurely. Slowly, he gave her a light embrace back. The eyes of the other dolls on them are still ever present in the back of his mind. He sighed, letting himself relax for once. "You're going to get us both killed," he murmured.
"I'd like to see them try." If only he had her spirit. So many years of isolation made that fire run cold. So many escape attempts that only ended up in failure. He could never hold the same conviction as she did. She pulled back slowly, trying to lighten his spirits with a bright smile. It did very little to assuage his concerns. "Give me four days to come up with a plan and sneak in here."
He stood, crossing his arms and looking down at her tiredly. "Good, then that gives me four days to come up with a list of reasons why you shouldn't go through with this stupid plan of yours."
"I can't wait to hear them!" She laughed.
"I'm already at twenty," despite himself, he couldn't stop the small smile from forming. It dropped when he laid eyes on Ox again. The bunny took in a shaky breath, smiling.
"I knew you were better than this," Ox had half a mind to tackle Lou in a hug of his own. It had been so long since they'd embraced.
Lou didn't share the smile. There was still that pain in his chest every time he looked at Ox. All he could remember was the feeling of betrayal when the bunny wanted to leave. Pushing that down, for now, he faced Ox, a placid look on his face as he tilted his head toward an eager Moxy. "Talk her out of this nonsense. I'm serious about this idea being dangerous--fatal, actually."
Moxy gave Lou a sarcastic look, "Not gonna happen. You should know by now that I'm not so easily swayed."
"So I've heard," Lou rolled his eyes. He checked behind them to make sure the robots weren't returning. "We push our luck with every minute. You all need to leave now."
Moxy gave one last surprising hug to him, arms wrapping around his legs. "Thank you," she sighed. Lou patted her head and ushered her on. He didn't give Ox the time of day. The bunny pursed his lips and forced himself to walk on with Moxy.
Lou watched all the Uglies file on through the pipe. The ones who had only seen the display gave him curious looks. Some of the younger dolls skipped happily, waving to him with so much gratitude. They'd seen enough to know that they were no longer headed to death. Lou merely gave them a curt nod as they walked back. He continued to keep an eye out until every last Ugly disappeared through the pipe. Staring into the dark void for a heartbeat longer, he took in a deep breath and turned to head back to his mansion. The robots still had to be taken care of.
He just hoped that Moxy would change her mind in the next four days. The idea of him being thrown into recycling did little to phase him. He had imagined committing the deed himself when escape was impossible, but he couldn't let that happen to Moxy.
The realistic part of him knew she would be back.
And he hated how much hope that gave him.
Family Time: Part 1
Despite the girl’s fears of screaming and dramatics, Cleo and Little Vic were exceedingly well behaved both in the airport and while on the plane. It probably helped that their father had obtained the entire first class cabin; the children could play or sleep or whatever caught their tiny little fancies. Victor watched them with softness in his eyes and his wife’s hand clutched tightly in his own. “They look so much like us at that age,” he commented, watching as their older son so patiently listened to his younger sister’s stories and played her imaginary games.
“Like a glimpse into the past,” the girl agreed, resting her head on Victor’s shoulder. “Do you think we would have ended up together and this happy if we hadn’t gone through all of that mess in the past?”

“Pretty, isn’t it?”
Jungkook’s eyes are flecked with silver, his smile, like that of a fascinated child. It sends chills to your spine. The sight before you had not been all too familiar. A child weeps beside his mother’s dead body, a man drags himself across the street, paralyzed waist down. A young boy who would look you and Jungkook’s age had you been mortal, tells his friend he hadn’t seen his cousin when he saw familiar red shoe attached to a leg.
“Let’s go back.” You say dryly, the nearest trees trembling as your wings flare.
“Listen, can you hear them?” Jungkook whizzes past you with excitement, “ah, music to my ear.”
At this speed and height, the air pressure is strong enough to burst a mortal’s eardrum but you can hear just fine. The newscasters’ rushed sentence, the shouts to evacuate, the crackling of fire not too far from the city which ether Jungkook had split into two with his bare hands.
“There are people dying,” you regret snapping at him the moment his expression drops.
