Fuck development
Many Liberals but also productivist socialists, especially Marxist-Leninists will praise & fawn over “development” & praise countries like China for development & mass urban projects, they view mass production & development as the highest stage of human cooperation.
“Development” isn’t just a neutral idea, it’s a human supremacist ideology that frames non-urban, ecological/green spaces as something evil to be fought & destroyed & conquered by human civilization. Urban civ is not the result of stateless moneyless voluntary cooperation, aka the society communism supposedly wants to build, but of centralization, war, colonialism, capitalism, mass coercion, so why would a “communist” be in love with development?
Well there are a few reasons, we are fed the idea that development = progress, & a lot of communists want to “progress” as in move away from traditional social structures like capitalism, nationalism & patriarchy, there is absolutely nothing wrong with hating capitalism, nationalism & patriarchy, but these people are confused with the idea that progress/utopia is when the world is covered in skyscrapers & high speed rails, so in addition to wanting to progress beyond reactionary structures they, because of what they’ve been told progress is, want to build more factories, more skyscrapers & more mines, they fail to analyze how extraction, production & development reflect an inherently capitalistic relationship to our earth.
Development isn’t a “progressive” ideology, if anything it’s reactionary, having historically & still being used to justify supremacist attitudes, colonialism/neo-colonialism & racism. If “the left” has a reactionary problem it’s productivists and/or Leninists, not eco-anarchists.
since time immemorial humans stoked campfires and foraged and crafted and now we're in a poorly kept zoo where you're not allowed to have a fire in your own fireplace due to pollution, can't fish in a creek, can't gather fruit or play in a meadow or paint things where you feel they should be painted. modern society is a prison to the soul.
We're SO close to realizing we're not living the way we're meant to. I see people noticing the shift. On TikTok, everyone talks about all of the human behaviors they love. I've seen mentions on how we stand on our toes when scared to look bigger, or how we all pause as a group when we hear something strange. These are natural instincts. They remind us we're alive.
Right now, humans are experiencing mass zoochosis. Depression and anxiety have exploded recently. Many experts say it's because of capitalism..... And i agree.
Humans weren't meant to work all day, every day. The jobs people do are important, yes. But what if we called them hobbies instead? What if we did them because we care about each other, not just for money? We're the adults now, we're not children anymore, you should not need green paper slips as an incentivization to want to help others.
For example, people would volunteer at water treatment facilities if it's something they enjoy or do it simply because they know humans need clean water. That care should be the motivation, Not money. You shouldn't need payment to want to help society.
Speaking of which, would you do your hobby all day? Of course not, people need rest or get bored and want to explore their options 'lest you find comfort in routine, in which case, no judgement here. So i have proposed a counter; humans could learn as many different skills possible (if they want) and take shifts. That way, everyone has free time. And no one should have ever been made to feel guilty for resting for any reason at all. Hobbies are done out of passion and understanding, not by force.
My parents once asked me, "Why don't kids go outside anymore?" and almost instantly, i had known the answer like it was something i just remembered. I knew deep down that it was because we've created an environment that doesn't match how we're meant to live. Slowly but very surely, we're becoming the humans from WALL-E. Everything that our children's story books and movies warned us about is becoming a reality, people being addicted to their screens, a rise in health problems, and even a rise in mental health issues.. And while i can joke about it now and look back, i genuinely used to think my mom and dad were just being conservative. I really thought they were just enforcing the stereotypical "back in my day" kind of speak, but perhaps they knew much more than i thought they had through their own observations of the people around them. And now, when i warn people about the future of humanity, i realize why my parents were so frustrated when i would be so quick to brush them off.
I'm not saying give up the simple comforts we've created like your bed or technology, (Though I'd argue technology is addictive and at the very least you should use blue light glasses and reduce it when possible) but we should, as baby steps, aim to preserve community space places for things like climbing, running, and socializing. Make it friendly for introverts and extroverts and people with disabilities or mental health problems alike. We should even learn foraging, hunting small things, and farming again. After all, give a man a fish and he's fed for a day, teach him how to fish and he'll be set for life.
This system as we all know unfortunately keeps us trapped. They tell you you're ugly, so that you'll buy their makeup. They create body image issues in doing so. They sell addictive processed foods that cause health issues, then they charge more for healthcare and organic food all while they exploit farmers and take their land or put limitations on them.
Humans are animals, remember that. So maybe your new years resolution for 2026 should be to be more environmentally friendly, to stretch at least a couple of minutes a day even if you're sedimentary due to depression or because you work from home even in your seat. You should eat at least an orange, or an apple, or banana a day, to drink one small cup of water, to learn something new, to eat with your fingers for one meal, to listen to your surroundings, to learn about your local flora and fauna, and to try, to hope, to imagine, and to believe. We need to stop hoping for a force stronger than us to send someone or something our way to change the future, we can't keep saying that nothing happens or that things will magically get better. I understand you may be spiritual, and you want to believe that for all of humanities wrong-doings there must be at least some form of punishment for those hurt. But to tell you the truth... You are the only one, among many others, who can change the world. It isn't that you can't, it's that you keep giving up because you are impatient and never believe in yourself.
