Would you believe me if I said almost all the tech bros I went to college with thought our ethics classes were a waste of time
Yeah, it's a pretty common story I hear, unfortunately.
I don't want to generalize because there's definitely people that care in the tech industry -- I know some personally! -- but, well, stereotypes are stereotypes because they have some truth to them, and the "tech bro that thinks ethics class are a waste of time" is definitely one of those stereotypes that I think has credence.
If you have the opportunity to talk to any given person interested in tech, what I've found to be a good, fast and dirty litmus test is to shift the topic to people they admire. You'll get your Steve Jobs, you'll get your Elon Musks (imo the worst), you'll even get your Andrew Tates (close 2nd worst), sometimes even your Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos, and it kinda tells you a bit about them, like Pokemon types, but my general thumb of rule is if they idolize Musk or Tate, that's when you throw the smokebomb and get the fuck out of there. Not that the other people in the list are admirable by any stretch, but they are more generic answers and less bright colors in the wild indicating highly venomous animals.
That said, as previously mentioned, I do personally know some pretty down-to-earth tech dudes and dudettes that I hope to see succeed because their ideas would be pretty good to see in practice, especially with someone at the helm that won't only have dollar signs in their eyes and middle fingers for everyone that isn't a rich industry.
Just some food for thought during the hiatus. Since they aren’t on remnant anymore will the dust parts of their weapons and equipment not work anymore? I hope it’s addressed because that could cause some real problems like Yang’s weapon no longer working at all to Weiss losing half her arsenal of glyphs.
On the one hand, we don’t know why dust doesn’t work off of Remnant. Wherever they are could fall under the same conditions Remnant does and allow for dust use.
On the other, Dust being unusable means their Scrolls don’t work, and thus everyone who fell can’t just, y’know, call each other on the short-range network, so it does add some extra drama beyond adding limitation to the inevitable fights.
Personally? I would like to see them have to work without Dust. Yang and Blake will be pretty fine, Ruby might struggle, Weiss will be missing half her arsenal, and Jaune would reliant on shield-bashing.
Now I’m imagining a situation where Mirio thinks he can be a cool upper class man and help Izuku by introducing him to everyone but he obviously knows everyone already and all mirio’s attempts at coolness are blow away by the fact that izuku almost knows everyone there better than mirio does
I mean consider that Mirio will know Izuku well before he becomes his upperclassman, because Mirio will be learning from Nighteye before Izuku gets to UA. They’re gonna be buds!
Your Salem theories and the general stress of this volume has me hearing kill bill sirens every time Jaune’s name appears on my feed
every jaune stan is living in a state of perpetual stress. we’ve been thinking a tyrian attack is going to happen for three fucking weeks free me from this pain rooster teeth.
I don’t who the bigger clowns are at this point, wr people screaming about queer baiting or Jaune stans.
im gonna go with wr peeps who think ruby and weiss not interacting much this volume equates to homophobia bc at least jaune stans are well aware of their clown status and the fact that what they want to see probably won’t be a thing in the show.
I think the biggest place that Ozpin and Qrow trip up in their logic of telling Pyrrha all the relevant information is that as soon as she had the maiden powers and then they basically got her out of beacon when were they going to explain Salem? Like by the way you’re going to be hunted by an immortal witch for the rest or your foreseeably not very long life and also you can never talk to your friends again sorry. It just seems pretty awful in my eyes. I just wanna know what you think. No shade
Hey! No shade intended or received. I love good discussion about this show 💚
There are a couple of things to unpack here. The first is simply, why would they leave Beacon? I think it’s important to remember what the world was like when Pyrrha was asked to be a Maiden. Namely, they were in a time of peace.
It’s easy to forget given how much awful stuff has happened in the last three volumes, but things were going extraordinarily well back then. The Great War is long over, the Kingdoms are working together, the schools are thriving, and the worst thing Salem seems to have done in years is attack Amber, someone who (as Qrow mentions) was also just young and inexperienced. An easy target, so to speak. In short, Ozpin had confidence in Beacon’s stability and though there were vague threats of something brewing (the Queen has pawns) I don’t think he had any inkling that Salem had orchestrated an attack that would do such colossal damage. That blindsided him, particularly since Salem only managed such an attack through the betrayal of Leo, someone Ozpin thought he could trust 100%.
So you’re Ozpin: the biggest threat that you know of right now is that Amber will soon die and pass the power onto Salem’s mysterious henchmen. Really can’t have that. You need to give the rest of the power to someone trustworthy who meets the Maiden’s ridiculous young/girl/etc. rules, someone like Pyrrha. But that doesn’t mean once she has it you chuck her directly into the war. Hell, it would be stupid to chuck a half-trained kid into the fight when, given these decades of peace, there’s absolutely no reason to. They just need to house the power, keep it safe and out of Salem’s hands, not necessarily use it yet. I don’t think he had any intention of changing Pyrrha’s life much after she received the Maiden’s power. I mean sure, she’d need to undergo additional training to learn to control it and there were potential consequences depending on how her soul/aura merged with Amber’s, but why would she leave Beacon? Why wouldn’t she be allowed to talk to her friends? Ozpin encourages teamwork. The last thing he wants to do is isolate people. He also, presumably, wants to keep Maidens near their vaults in case he ever needs to access their relic.
So you keep Pyrrha at Beacon. She receives the power, you deal with the after effects of the transfer, you train her to control it… but that’s it. For now anyway. Raven has certainly proven that you can easily keep the powers hidden. There’s no reason why she can’t continue classes while also keeping the power safe. Remember, Pyrrha’s just a first year and Ozpin would want her to continue her education at Beacon - the curriculum he designed - so that she can continue to improve and gain the fighting/strategy/social skills she came for in the first place. The real question is what would she be expected to do after graduation. That’s where the limitations come in, since presumably Ozpin wouldn’t want a Maiden running off to a random corner of the world… but she can still be Pyrrha. She can learn about Salem later, when she’s ready, older, when she needs to, and they’re all deciding how to best merge her interests (protect humanity) with both an advantage and a threat (having the Maiden powers). Maybe she does huntress-y things but just sticks close to Vale. Maybe she goes on specific missions for Ozpin that benefit the larger war somehow. Maybe she never even uses her power since, again, the point is largely to keep Maidens hidden. That’s personally what I’d encourage. If Pyrrha can pass as a regular huntress unworthy of notice outside of her youth championships… all the better. Let Salem scratch her head over who the power went to after Amber.
All of which is to say, I don’t think they would have left Beacon, or expected Pyrrha to fight Salem, or cut her off from the rest of the cast. As far as Ozpin knew at the time, Beacon had stood for decades and would continue to stand for decades more; a place of safety and support. Why give that up? They also did an excellent job laying out all of the risks and downsides of this endeavor - everything from yes it’s a secret to yes you might lose your soul - so if they’d expected her to leave school or end her career as a huntress, that would have come up in the briefing. (Which I definitely don’t remember, but then it’s not like I have the whole conversation memorized. So if someone does tell her this at some point feel free to correct me…)
As James pointed out, Ozpin plays the long, at times seemingly passive game. He doesn’t use the relics, he hides them. He doesn’t attack head on, he sends in his scouts. Because that’s how you win when you can’t kill your enemy. In the same way, all we know for sure is that he wanted Pyrrha to have the power so that someone else can’t.
I’m actually really curious to see how jnr would react to emerald changing sides initially
I feel like they'd probably be extremely suspicious and stand-offish. They wouldn't be openly hostile, but they would definitely corner Ruby and ask why she'd take Emerald in when Emerald was definitely part of the Fall.

Ren and Nora were silent behind Jaune as he stood in front of Ruby, arms crossed. She watched the muscles on the left side of his jaw work as he ground his teeth. She sighed.
"Jaune..." she began, already knowing what he would say.
He exploded. "How could you just let her join us! Do you not remember that she was working with Cinder directly?! Pyrrha and Penny's blood is on her hands!" She just sighed again, already frustrated with him.
"Everybody deserves and second chance, Jaune. Emerald said she defected and wants to help us. Until she proves otherwise, I'm choosing to believe her." Ren stepped forward then.
"Ruby...I think it is unwise to do this, considering you are the one Cinder wants dead most out of us," he said, using that calm tone of his. She shook her head and crossed her arms.
"I get that, Ren, but...I believe her. You all need to give her a chance, please. You don't have to like her or be friends with her, but...don't be cruel or rude or hostile. She wants to help. Let her. Please."

Nora is letting Jaune and Ren do the talking because she understands giving people second chances but also Emerald is tied to the person who is directly responsible for Pyrrha's death. She has extremely mixed feelings.
