35. What is one essential thing to remember when writing a villain?
For original works: People don't generally do things that they, personally, believe are unjustified.
Notice I said 'unjustified' and not necessarily 'immoral' because real life and fiction are full of people who do things they 'know' are 'wrong' but justify it to themselves as "making the hard decisions so other people don't have to" (this is basically always wrong, by the way) or as the "lesser of two evils", which is sometimes, though not always, genuinely the best option available to them in a shitty situation.
But people don't generally do things they think don't have a justification. They make justifications up! We're human! We can justify anything! Sometimes the justification is as simple as "I deserve this" or "they're basically asking for it". Often it takes the form of convincing themselves that the other person is the aggressor or at fault in some way--I wouldn't HAVE to keep executing you worthless peasants if you would simply GET IN LINE AND DEDICATE EVERY MOMENT OF YOUR EXISTENCE TO PURSUING MY PERSONAL GOALS. Well if you didn't WANT to be tortured you shouldn't have INTERFERED with my VICTORY. We always have a reason.
For fanfic: THEIR CANON CHARACTERIZATION. JESUS. This isn't even about a character 'going too far'. (Like. Palpatine is 'going too far'? Delilah Briarwood took something 'too far'? Uh, Yeah, I Sure Hope So.) It's about going in the wrong direction.
Like. I fucking despise Genn Greymane, but I've gotten comments on my WoW fics complimenting me on his characterization. Because I don't just go "ugh I hate Genn" and immediately make him universally wrong and unbearable in every scene and give him every social bigotry to ever exist and have him insult and mistreat everyone ever all the time constantly every single line he ever speaks.
Tl;dr if a character is a villain, they are a villain for a reason. If you hate them, you hate them for a reason. Portraying them accurately should be enough. You don't need to make up different unrelated stuff. Make them shitty in the ways they actually are.
76. Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of eleventh hour?
I did actually! I had a whole mental image for Safia's actual confession--but it didn't actually add anything to the narrative, didn't work for the flow or timing of the fic, and all the emotional beats would have been redundant.
It would have massively fucked the pacing and added nothing of real worth, so I never developed it into a real scene!

54. What’s your favorite part about the fanfiction writing process?
I know how I want to answer this but I'm not sure how to put it into words!
So there's a 'spitballing' phase of fanfic for me, where I'm talking shop with other friends who are writers and have excellent characterization/narrative instincts--we toss ideas back and forth, reshape them, develop them, and honestly 75% of the time this doesn't turn into fic at all--it starts as just talking about a piece of media, you know? I didn't sit down and go "how would I write Safia's backstory", I started by talking about the sheer depth of implication in what we know about her backstory from the game and me and my smartest friends turned that over together, and then I ended up using the compelling picture it created to shape future fic series.
But there's also a point where we've very much spitballing a what-if scenario, a how-do-you-think-THAT-went-down discussion, etc, and it spins off into generating imagery and dialogue snippets. And then, when I sit down to write real prose, I almost always have a tab in my document where I copy over the vibes-generation and the lines that really stuck with me, not even necessarily in an order just a collection.
Translating that spitballing into a cohesive image is one of my favorite brass-tacks bits of the writing process!

7. How do you choose which POV to write from?
Honestly, the POV chooses you.
At least I think that SHOULD happen! The POV is gonna be determined by what a scene needs to accomplish--in terms of plot, characterization, themes, conversation with the overall narrative and original material, etc.
So it's sort of....what's the POINT of this scene. Some scenes will work equally well from multiple POVs, but they'll also--or again, they SHOULD--FEEL different depending on whose perspective you're in. You're going to get different insights, different analysis of the situation, different aside commentary, and different assumptions being made. Characters will interpret events differently and focus on different things.
It's often much easier to tell you've picked the WRONG POV than to be certain you've got the right one.
Yeah, I've had fics that fought me for a long time only for me to realize it was because I was coming at it from the wrong PoV—Mortuum Flagellas springs to mind, I'd originally conceived of it as Cass POV the whole way through and then realized I needed Ripley's (incredibly callous and hypocritical) outside view of her to make the story land.

i think where i feel the most different in perspective from the average person who enjoys doing Fandom stuff is that i don't particularly care for media that Would Be Good If It Were Good and almost nothing i make is ever coming from the desire to "fix" a canon. the deciding factor of whether or not i'm gonna like something in a fandomy way or just a regular way is completely unrelated to any Missed Potential and entirely hinges on how much i feel like i want to or am capable of filling in the gaps in a narrative or a characters' life that just didn't warrant getting any screentime in the source material. like when i think something had a bunch of potential but completely missed the mark in execution that's normally disappointing more than it is any kind of inspiring. the stuff that makes me want to Create the most fervently is stuff i think is good for real.
tangentially related to this is i think sometimes people are unfair or just kind of incorrect about stuff they perceive to be "missed potential" in fiction. like they see elements of characters/a story that could easily handle being elaborated upon because the author has done a good job making something deep and textured, but these elements ultimately are not the point of the story and spending too much time on them would bog down the pacing or otherwise complicate/overstuff the narrative. and instead of realizing that sometimes being left wanting more is a sign of good writing, they'll view it as the author Dropping or Forgetting something. like it's usually not a mistake when side characters are less developed than the core cast and their circumstances do not get the plot's full attention.
a fictional world that clearly has more stories in it other than the one you're seeing now is not necessarily missed potential, that may just be regular potential.

Look, sometimes you just need forty thousand words of comprehensively researched geopolitical worldbuilding in order to adequately contextualise a scene of two rival princesses angrily jerking each other off. That's totally normal.
