Contronyms, also known as Janus Words

Cleave (Hew has the same two meanings):  to break apart; to attach together

Anxious:  excited for something; worried about something

Moot:  a debatable thing; a thing not worth debating

Nervy:  nervous; brash and confident

Dust (v):  to sweet away dust; to add dust

Aught:  nothing; anything

Restive:  relaxed; edgy

Fast:  moving quickly; held still

Seeded/Pitted:  seeds/pits have been removed; seeds/pits have been added

Rent:  rent TO; rent FROM

Sanguine:  cool and cheerful;  bloody or bloodthirsty

Aloha (heh):  hello; goodbye

and, these days, “Literally”:  in actual fact;  figuratively

** I also get pissy about ennervate (weaken) and innervate (energize)

“Ich möchte meine Haare wachsen lassen.” ➤ “I want to grow out my hair.” “Ich möchte meine Haare wachsen lassen.” ➤ “I want to get my hair waxed.“

“Ich musste das Schild umfahren.” ➤ “I had to swerve around the sign.” “Ich musste das Schild umfahren.” ➤ “I had to run over the sign.”

“Er wollte den Gesetzesentwurf aufheben.“ ➤ “He wanted to keep the draft bill.” “Er wollte den Gesetzesentwurf aufheben.“ ➤ “He wanted to abolish the draft bill.”
