🧊Antarctica. This is the seventh continent. The ice-encased land mass at the bottom of the world. In nature programs and in our textbooks, we've seen its isolated wildness. Because of these factors, it may appear to be difficult to grasp. Even if it's feasible, it's unlikely. It's not, however. 🐧Antarctica has never been more accessible to daring visitors despite its supposedly insurmountable isolation. The 2016-2017 season had over 45,000 visitors from all over the world,⛴️ including the United States, China, Australia, Germany, Canada and the UK, France and India, amongst many more countries and regions of the world. ❄️Ushuaia, Argentina, is the most common departure point for Antarctic expeditions, and it can be reached in three and a half hours by direct flight from Buenos Aires. Summertime in the Port of Ushuaia sees a steady flow of expedition ships docking and disembarking, just like any other port in the Caribbean, Europe, or Alaska.

Day 8, our last proper day in Antarctica. I'm not crying, you're crying. We woke up to the sight of Deception Island looming outside the window, a volcano which last erupted in 1969 I think? We moored in Whaler's Bay and learned all about the ruins of the Norwegian whaling operation in the 1930s. Photo 6 is where they stored the whale oil. Photo 8 is where they melted the blubber into oil. Try not to gag. Obviously there were penguins. They're a prevalent as herring gulls in Brighton but much less likely to attack you for your chips. There was also a leopard seal just chilling on the beach so we all stared at it for ages waiting for it to yawn. Because that’s what you want to see, that ridiculously terrifying yawn. It’s almost like it unhinges its jaw like a fucking snake. They’re not the cutest seal in the ocean, bless it, with its Joker grin. It's also got a definite head and neck unlike most seals which are just chonky torpedo bois, and is that the remnants of penguin around its chops? We'd sort of resigned ourselves to the fact that we probably didn't have time to do the polar plunge on this trip but we'd done so much cool shit that we told ourselves it didn't matter. I couldn't hide my disappointment when the anchor was raised though, until we realised we were heading further into the caldera, not out of it. Could it be...? Yes! We were going to be allowed to throw ourselves into the 3.5°C water and... wait... why was I excited about this again? It was pretty fucking epic to be fair. I mean, the second I was in I wanted to get out again and scrambled like a maniac on the slippery ladder until the guys hauled me back up. I was given a towel, a hug and a shot and was pretty much warm almost instantly. What an experience. Days 9 and 10 were spent bouncing over the Drake Passage back to Ushuaia, day 11 was disembarkation day. I think it's going to take me a while to process this properly. Day 7 started with a trip to an island in Mikkelsen Harbour to put some nesting gentoo penguins in our eyeholes. Nope, still not board of the waddling little comedy shows wrapped in a tuxedo. Those piles of stones they're lying on are their nests, they've all got eggs. If you close one eye and squint with the other this could be a scene of tourists sprawled on the pebbles at Brighton beach. It looks about as comfortable. Also featured were a load of weddell seals. If you don't catch a seal with its head up you might as well be looking at a field of huge slugs. Imagine waking up in your tent on a long distance trail and a slug that size is right there watching you sleep. That afternoon we shifted to Cierva Cove where the water was so still it could almost be described as glass. You could even see the delicate ripples made by tiny bits of brash ice as it floated silently past the ship. And the scenery? This is what we’d paid money for. These were the photos you’d see in the brochures. The landscape practically screamed “Antarctica” loud enough to cause avalanches. We were taken out in zodiacs to look at ice. There was a leopard seal just floating around on its little iceberg having a lovely time until several boats of tourists breezed past disturbing its peace. I think this little excursion was one of my favourite things we did on this trip, the zodiac grinding through the brash ice as Matt told us what we were looking at. We saw another weddell seal too which stared right back at us for a couple of seconds before diving out of sight. Day 6 started with killer whales (photos 6 & 7) but also a humpback whale in amongst them. Apparently they're not the type of killer whale to take down a humpback and it's more likely the humpback was trying to chase them out of its area like a grumpy old bloke shooing teenagers off his lawn. Or in this case, a slightly murderous family. Next came penguins of the adelie variety. You can smell the buggers before you see them. There were fluffy chicks too, you can see one in photo 4 if you look closely and try to imagine a face on the fuzzy black blob in the middle. Photo 5 is a skua so a big boo hiss from the audience, please. It likes to steal and eat penguin eggs and isn't above going for a chick as a tasty snack. It's only trying to survive like everything else but I think most of us are Team Penguin. There was some cracking scenery today too as we cruised down the Lemaire Channel. Icebergs and glaciers and all manner of your quintessential Antarctica eyehole fodder. Day 5, and we woke up to an Antarctic blizzard, the snow sweeping in sideways and settling on the deck. Obviously this meant we had to spend a few minutes after breakfast lobbing it at each other like the mature and sensible adults we are. We couldn't visit Port Lockroy because they'd taken damage in a storm last night. To be fair the winds were around 100kms per hour so I'm surprised they still have a building. We did get to land at an Argentine base called Almirante Brown though and it's actually on the peninsula rather than an island so I definitely feel we can tick the seventh continent off. We can go home now. We were in the last group for the landing so we had to wait for a few people to leave first but they took us on a little zodiac ride to look at someblue eyed shags. That was awesome, they had some fluffy chicks, but also awesome was the humpback whale that was so incredibly close to the zodiac I could have fingered its blowhole. We landed right by a gentoo penguin colony and oh sweet Jesus, they fucking stink. I've totally rethought stealing one to keep in the shower. They're very cute though. We had to cross their little penguin highway so we had to sidle quite close to them. Not sad about this. We walked up a fuck off great hig hill for a spot of excellent eyehole fodder which was all when and good but then we had to get down again and I have all the grace of a giraffe trying to get on a lilo in a swimming pool. I definitely stacked it a couple of times which wouldn't be so bad but the only contact between you and Antarctica should be your disinfected bog boots, not your grubby mitts and fat arse. That evening we moored in a sheltered bay where the water was so still and it was so peaceful.
