To be completely honest, I need a break from Meghan Markle. I can’t seem to digest anymore puff pieces her PR team are endlessly determined to force down our throats. Soon, I’m going to need a royal enema to rid my body of all the toxic sludge that is the Duke & Duchess of Sussex.
I want to talk about the tragedy that was Princess Margaret’s Royal love, and life.
First, can we take a moment to appreciate just how stunning the she was?:
The Princess had started down a doomed, tragic, but passionate path. Her Royal romance with Peter Townsend, her fathers former equerry, was a modern day Titanic-esque love story....with Peter deemed not a “proper fit” for the Princess. It was brutal, treacherous, painful & ended in heartbreak.
The controversy was the result of Peter formerly being a married man, unsuitable to marry into the Royal family. The Monarchy did not believe in divorce, no matter the circumstances. Peters wife had had multiple affairs while he was away carrying out his Royal duties, and she was the party to file for divorce. This, ultimately, didn’t matter.
Trying to support her sister, The Queen really tried to find a work-around so that Margaret could marry the love of her life. After many false hopes & devestating decisions, it was ultimately determined that the Princess could only marry Peter Townsend if she were willing to be stripped of her titles, abandon the royal residences, and give up her income. Hardly a fair or practical offer.
So, it was with great anguish, that on October 31st 1955, Princess Margaret released an official palace statement, announcing the end of her relationship with her fiancé, Peter Townsend.
All because Peter was a divorcee. It sounds so unbelievably unbelievable, considering our current state of affairs (H & M).
The Princess eventually moved forward, and married a photographer named Anthony Armstrong-Jones.
Though she adored her husband, it is thought that Princess Margaret never quite got over her first love, Peter Townsend, and in 1978, the Princess & Armstrong called it quits. She never remarried, and her health took a turn, that she wouldn’t recover from.
In 1985, Princess Margaret underwent a biopsy of her lung, to rule out malignancy (She was a heavy smoker). The results came back negative, but her health issues didn’t end there.
In 1988, while vacationing with friends in Mustique, she suffered her first of what would be 3 strokes.
In December of 2000, it is believed that she suffered a second stroke, while keeping a very low profile at Sandringham in Norfolk.
Her 3rd & final stroke occurred in March of 2001. This affected the left side of her body, and impaired her vision. From here, her health deteriorated quickly. Princess Margaret died in February of 2002.
It’s worth noting that the Princess also suffered a bout of hepatitis in 1984, a mental breakdown after her divorce to Armstrong-Jones in the late 1970’s, and multiple spells of depression throughout her life.
Princess Margaret chose duty (not money) over love. This, I have the utmost respect for. Tis not an easy decision to make, to ignore the hearts calling, and chose duty to country, over the one life that we’re granted here on this earth. To me, that’s commendable.
And so, this October, I choose to be humbled and to remember the strength, courage, & grace, of the stunningly beautiful Princess Margaret, who sacrificed so much.
