What is your opinion on Circumcision?

Hello darling, thank you for your question.

I am completely against it. It is not okay to cut the foreskin off a baby’s penis.

The foreskin is a natural part of a male’s body not a ‘mistake of nature’, it helps protect them from infections, irritation and allows for normal sexual functioning. A person should not have anything cut off them without their full consent. By doing it to a baby who cannot choose a person is violating the babies body without their consent or justifiable reason. 

Many people who circumcise their children often come up with the statements, it’s necessary,” “it’s cleaner,” “it’s healthier,” “everyone does it,”, none of these claims are supported by any medical research. They are cultural myths, not facts. 

Many parents also claim that “it doesn’t hurt that much” or that “they will forget it anyway”. The fact is that the foreskin itself has more nerve endings than any part of the body. 

 A recent study in the West showed that most newborns do not receive adequate anaesthesia, and 45% of doctors do not use any anaesthesia at all.

A while back ‘In 1997, doctors in Canada did a study to see what type of anesthesia was most effective in relieving the pain of circumcision.  As with any study, they needed a control group that received no anesthesia.  The doctors quickly realized that the babies who were not anesthetised were in so much pain that it would be unethical to continue with the study.  Even the best commonly available method of pain relief studied, the dorsal penile nerve block did not block all the babies’ pain.  Some of the babies in the study were in such pain that they began choking and one even had a seizure  (Lander 1997).’ The idea of forgetting the experience is silly because studies have shown otherwise, ‘The pain of circumcision causes a rewiring of the baby’s brain so that he is more sensitive to pain later  (Taddio 1997, Anand 2000).  Circumcision also can cause post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anger, low self-esteem and problems with intimacy  (Boyle 2002, Hammond 1999, Goldman 1999).’ Even if the person cannot recall it later in life, it doesn’t make it right to harm them.

On top of all this even after the procedure, there are many short and long-term issues that circumcision can cause. Short term, it can cause quite a bit of bleeding, damage to the urethra or gangrene. In some rare cases, it has even killed the baby.  Long-term problems can include restricted urine flow, problems healing and infections.

I think its the absolute responsibility for families and parents to protect, take care and make appropriate decisions for their child’s health. I heavily question any parent who decides to do this to their child if they really are fit to be a parent if they are okay with harming them in such a way or not care enough to be informedl.

I’m glad that at least in Australia, more parents are choosing not to circumcise their babies. However, more awareness is important here and globally to prevent such a horrible thing from happening to such young and vulnerable babies.

Circumcision has been a go to for HIV prevention, especially in Africa. One researcher questions its validity.

The U.S. media reports that circumcision prevents your chance of contracting HIV by 60 percent. If we were to take a look at what the studies actually showed (summing the results of the three randomized trials the US media often cites), the difference between intact men who got HIV vs. circumcised men who got HIV was 1.3 percent; 58.7 percent smaller than what the media reports (this has to do with relative vs absolute risk reduction - a distinction largely lost to the public). And, if you were to take a look at the study design, they are unapologetically designed to favor the hypothesis that circumcision reduces your chance of contracting HIV. It is some of the most pathetic published research on the face of the planet, which is then unapologetically misrepresented in the media."
