Hear me out...
JUST in ACOWAR, we see:
Rhysand sacrificing his life to save Feyre
Cassian willing to die for Nesta
And Azriel sacrificing his life to save Elain
Now everyone can argue circles around each other, but Azriel rescuing Elain was inherently romantic.
Not only does she reach for him, say "you came for me", but he's bleeding out, she's protecting him from the hounds, he's carrying her and refusing to let her go, demanding "get those chains off her", then she kisses his cheek -
This is a romantasy. And that is a romantic scene right there. It is also a rescue scene. A scene where Feyre is brave. It can be all of these things at once... they are not mutually exclusive. In fact, most good writing involves more than one goal per scene, btw.
Now let's think. Just one book earlier, SJM declared Elain & Lucien mates. Chronologically, less than a year has passed. He was with them mere weeks ago.
I've always wondered if SJM was going for an Elucien endgame, why would she write such a powerful romantic scene with Azriel, instead of Lucien?
And I know many antis will be like "hehehe dummy Lucien wasn't there how could he save her??"
THAT'S MY POINT. SJM could've easily had Lucien present for the battle, but she didn't. In fact, Azriel is literally the spymaster wouldn't it make more sense for him to hunt down this fire queen in her lake?
Also - this point of "oh Lucien wasn't there he couldn't save her" is such a fucking cop out. He's her MATE.
If Rhysand could save Feyre from the opposite end of the continent on her wedding day, then Lucien could've saved Elain.
"Oh but Lucien was too far away"
If Bryce could cross WORLDS, I'm sure Lucien could've paid the Prythian tolls to get to Elain .
It's just never made any sense to me why SJM has given all these romantic moments, even just MOMENTs with Elain to Azriel and not her mate.
Unless, of course, she's setting up for Elriel. Unless of course she's going on about nature chose wrong and rejected mating bonds and oh the cauldron was wrong....
SJM for TIME magazine 2024
“That’s something I find to be very interesting. What if the forces that be put you with the wrong person? Or what if you just decide, eh, I’m not interested. There’s a lot to explore within the concept of mates and your agency about it. I’m not going to say if I am exploring it in future books or not, but it definitely offers a wealth of things to explore with this concept of free will and what is true love. Is it something that’s destined? Or is it something that you make? Is it both?”
SJM on CHD 2026
“There’s a biological component to it, where you can be mated to someone that is not actually your true love. So, there's, like, true, true mates, and then there's kind of, like, nature made a mistake, like Rhys's parents did not love each other, like, it was not a great relationship, but they were mates, and it was, like, there's a biological thing where they're, like, we want to be together, but then it's, like, we're fucking miserable with each other, especially his [Rhys's] mom, so it's tricky, but then when you find your perfect mate, like, Rhys and Feyre, Cassian and Nesta, like, that is the last little piece of your soul that was, like, kind of a little broken and now you found your person."
“You’ve been forcibly essentially married to a stranger who was also involved in bringing you into this world, and betraying you, and shoving you into the Cauldron. It’s a lot. She’s got a lot of shit that she’s processing. And so, exploring a concept of free will, what does that look like with a mating bond? What does that mean? Does nature get it wrong sometimes?”
“It’s just, it's something that I really find to be an interesting concept, versus Feyre and Nesta, where it was so easy for them Like, nature picked right."
ACOTAR SERIES
“Why not make them [Elain and Azriel] mates?” I mused. “Why Lucien?”[…] “You said your mother and father were wrong for each other; Tamlin said his own parents were wrong for each other.” I peeled off my dressing robe. “So it can’t be a perfect system of matching. What if”—I jerked my chin toward the window, to my sister and the shadowsinger in the garden—“that is what she needs? Is there no free will?”
“A mating bond can be rejected.” Rhys says mildly, eyes flickering in the mirror as he drank in every inch of bare skin I have on display. “There is a choice. And sometimes, yes—the bond picks poorly. Sometimes the bond is nothing more than some…preordained guesswork at who will provide the strongest offspring. At it’s basest level, It’s perhaps only that. Some natural function, not an indication of true, paired souls.”
“What if the cauldron was wrong?”
Lucien and Tamlin did not betray the Archeron sisters—it was Ianthe. And here’s where I disagree: from the beginning, they chose to ally with a king everyone knew was untrustworthy. Not only that, people are so focused on Tamlin locking Feyre up that they forget everything else he did.
Tamlin forgave Ianthe after she sold out Feyre’s sisters. He literally allowed her to keep making decisions and face no real consequences. Yes, Tamlin didn’t personally sell them out, but he stood there, watched it happen, and then protected the person who caused the sisters so much trauma.
And where is Lucien in all of this? He sat there and nodded along, even when he knew it was wrong. Lucien stans love to say he couldn’t stand up to Tamlin because he had nowhere else to go. But standing by an abuser and doing nothing is still a choice. Lucien decided to stay, to watch, and to support Tamlin through all of those decisions, even if he didn’t agree with them.
If I had a friend who forgave someone that hurt the person I loved, I would walk away. I wouldn’t be an accomplice. If my best friend told me, “let’s go hurt people,” and I didn’t want to but still went along with it, even if I didn’t pull the trigger, I would still share some of the guilt.
Lucien is not 100% at fault. However, he chose to stay and watch instead of standing up for what he believed in. That’s why he is also part of Elain’s trauma. I don’t think he’s evil or wishes harm on anyone, but his lack of action and his decisions made him an accomplice, sadly.
Hi, I know this is a fictional series and these are fictional characters but if you wouldn’t say it in a real life situation, don’t say it with this. If it’s disgusting in real life, it’s disgusting always.
Let the womb theory die
Let the “she needs/should give lucien a chance” die
And I usually only tag these in the shipper/anti ship tags but this time I putting it in the series tag. Does this mean Gwynriels/eluciens will see it? Probably, but I don’t give a fuck and if you use these arguments on why elriel won’t happen/can’t happen/shouldn’t happen anything you say in response is invalid and will be ignored.
(Especially the womb theory, seriously what the fuck is wrong with you? Ps. Bones don’t stretch, it was mentioned to explain why Gwyn picked up training so fast. Genuinely why do you lack reading comprehension?)
Rhys: why did Azriel leave the meeting halfway through
Cassian: Elain sneezed in the next room
Rhys: and?
Cassian: and apparently he “needed to make sure she was alright”
Rhys: I hate it here
Me: BF please read this (Azriel Bonus) and tell me which chick the guy is interested in.
BF: what is it?
Me: fucking read it
BF: he loves that Elain chic and Rhysand is a cockblocker
Me: What about Gwyn?
BF: What about her?
Me: 😫Does he have a romantic interest in her?
BF: Umm… No. He said shes not even his friend
Me: He barely calls her a friend
Bf: Rhys cockblocked him
Me: again, 😫 What about Gwyn?
BF: what about her?
Me: Does he like her?
BF: Did you read it? He loves that Elain girl with the long hair (glares at my short hair), he thinks about her day and night. He’s pissed off but he didn’t run to Gwyn about it. They didn’t even talk about it. They aren’t like that? I thought you read a lot.
I love Elriel. 🩷💙🥰🥰💙🩷
That's it, k bye.
