reminder if you're in the UK, classic fm is playing their programme for anxious pets on bonfire night
this is marty mcfly. he is currently smooshed in a four inch gap in an office because he is Most Scared Cat Ever
many nights I will be laying in bed and be alarmed by what sounds like footsteps and a jingling collar before remembering that my roommate does, in fact, have a cat that just hides underneath my bed all day
Giant, anxious oompa-loompa of a cat locked onto my shoulder.
I had my eye on a certain shelter cat for about a week. The first time I looked, he fit all my requirements: young (2-3 years), shorthair, preferably male, okay with other cats. I checked back multiple times a day to see if he was still available. He was. And as the days went by and other cats’ profiles got put up and removed, he was still there. And I began to worry, because what was wrong with him? At first, he had a not too flattering picture. But as soon as they updated it and you could see his adorable little face with half a little mustache, I knew people would be interested in him. But they also updated his profile. Anxiety. Oh, same, little dude! When I finally went to the shelter and expressed interest in adopted a cat, the worker told me that they only had one adoptable cat left. I crossed my fingers as they went to get the sparse binder with a single page. It was him! They explained his situation and asked if I was sure I wanted to meet him. Yes! Yes I was! I told the shelter worker that I had been checking in in that cat specifically for the past week! He was the ONLY cat I wanted to meet, and the only cat available. It was perfection. Apparently, they had another slightly anxious cat that had also fit my needs, but he had so many people meet with him that day that he wasn’t currently available. My boy? No visits that day at all. My heart broke for this little man, and even though I knew he would take a lot of work, I had to have him.
While signing the paperwork, they wrote his name REALLY big on the adoption board, with exclamation points and hearts, because after three weeks of being at the shelter, he was finally going home.
He’s so different from my other cat, who’s 11 and I’ve had since she was a kitten. And I couldn’t be more excited to have this little man in my life. He’s a menace who got into the vents, has broken one set of blinds, and hides under the coffee table if the sun’s out. But we’re learning together, and he even let me pet him once! I just hope that he knows he’s safe now.
He got this close to me of his own free will and I’m so proud
nothing like childhood traumas having to be explained to folk for you to be like haha i’m ok! then have it linger for the rest of the day/week who knows we’ll have to see
Holy cow my other cat! This one’s name is Onion! He’s got ✨trauma induced anxiety ✨ and he behaves like a little man pretending to be a cat
He wants me to open the window and he only knows that open window = nice breeze and a Good Time. He does not understand that right now it’s only 10 degrees F outside and opening the window at this time would not be a Good Time. Nonetheless he begs me
