they both chose to save their mentor/father figure at the expense of others, complete with Centipede serum!

Daisy might not have personally killed or betrayed anyone, but it is very arguable that letting the planet be destroyed is way worse than anything Grant did in s1

I was always annoyed, in earlier seasons, by the tendency of SWWers to claim that SHIELD is just as bad as Grant/Hydra...........but we’ve reached that point

the fact that there was a DEBATE over whether to save one man or the planet? and then May made it literally IMPOSSIBLE to choose the planet?

they have all fallen way, way too far. they’re not heroes anymore. and their little circle of speeches at the end doesn’t change the fact that when the time came to walk the walk, only Coulson and Elena stepped up.

More ranting about AOS Season 5:

This season feels very lost. Like, I knew going in that season 5 was not gonna top season 4. However, I still had hope that the show would continue their hot streak in terms of storytelling. Now that we’re this far into the season, season 5 as a whole just feels disjointed and confused.

Let me break it down this way. Season 4 was amazing mainly because the story was split into three distinct arcs. Each arc told their own story, built to their own conclusion, and yet were connected to each other to form a bigger story. What’s important about season 4 is that the stories were focused. For example, although we did see AIDA in the Ghost Rider arc, her part didn’t overshadow the main focus of those episodes. 

Even my least favorite season, season 3, had more focused storytelling. The first half was getting to Maveth and dealing with Ward, which were resolved at the midseason finale. And the second half was dealing with Hive and figuring out who will die among the team, which were also resolved at the end of the season. Although season 3 did drag in many places, the season had an end goal and main villains that drove the story. Hive may be my least favorite AOS Big Bad (for now) but he helped keep the story focused. 

Now season 5...oh lord, it’s all over the place. The space arc, although it had Kasius to unify everything, the end goal and the villain were not on the same page. What was the end goal? At first, it was to save the future. But then it became about returning to the past.

And now in the second half, I’m not sure what any of this is building up to. There’s no central baddie that the team is working to defeat. HYDRA is there but it’s not clear what their significance is (yet). The end goal is just a vague “stop the bad future from happening”. Because of how vague the goal is, there’s not much tension in the story right now. And lastly, the writers seem more interested in exploring the group’s dynamics. I’m more invested in the relationships between the team members rather than the main plot of the season. Because really, where’s the plot? 

It says a lot when the biggest moments of this second half are the Fitzsimmons wedding, Coulson reveals he’s dying, Deke learns he’s Fitz and Simmons’ grandson, and Fitz’s split personality, which are all just character building/relationships.

Do you think you would be able to get more behind FS if it was written better? I think chemistry wise I would still ship both characters with other ppl but at least i would still want to watch the show. Also I think Barry/Iris is such a better version of the friends to lover trope in which one friend is pining after the other

Oh, definitely! Like, there have certainly been scenes when I’ve gone “awwww, maybe I can ship thiiiiiiiis nope they ruined it.” Honestly, three things would have to change/have been different for me to get behind fs:

the lead up to them getting together. he was a jerk about her not returning his feelings and the fact that EVERYONE was pushing Jemma to accept/return them will never stop making me uncomfortable

LET THEM HAVE ARCS OUTSIDE OF EACH OTHER. I’ve ranted about this before, but...let’s take a look at s5, hm? 

Jemma was enslaved by Kasius. Seems like something that’d be pretty traumatizing, especially with the whole sensory deprivation thing, but nope. Fitz shows up, she’s freed, and the whole thing is brushed aside minus a few offhand references on Jemma’s part. (and the team, aside from Daisy, was TOTALLY UNCONCERNED about her the whole time and STILL HASN’T ASKED what she went through, but I’m not sure we can blame that on fs.)

Fitz was in prison for six months?? Alone??? After watching his entire team disappear before his very eyes???? And was so desperate to get back to them that he just LOCKED HIMSELF IN CRYO FOR SEVENTY YEARS????? is this ringing a bell for anyone?

and no, okay, there’s even more but I’m stopping there because I’m getting too angry

the point is, as soon as the two of them are together, any emotional fall-out and/or logical follow-through from the super traumatic things they go through is immediately dropped. see also: Jemma undercover in Hydra, Fitz’s brain damage, JEMMA’S SEARCH FOR A WAY BACK TO WILL, WHICH GOT IMMEDIATELY PASSED OVER TO FITZ SO HE COULD PROVE WHAT A GREAT GUY HE WAS BY SEARCHING FOR THE WOMAN HE LOVES’ LOVE INTEREST

......which brings me to my next point: stop. telling. me. how. much. Fitz. loves. Jemma. and. how. much. he. would. do. for. her.

we do not need a dramatic recounting of all the, frankly, moronic ways he’s proved that he’s willing to die for her EVERY TIME they’re in a bit of danger

we DO need some acknowledgement that he’s done really stupid things and other people have suffered for it

this is not a positive thing (SACRIFICING THE WORLD IS NOT ROMANTIC. TRYING TO COMMIT SUICIDE BECAUSE YOU “CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT” THE PERSON YOU LOVE IS A BAD THING.) and Jemma should not present them as anything but negative.

like, let’s be honest here. Jemma was willing to DIE and BE TORTURED (*cough*which she got no emotional or even physical fall-out from*cough*) to keep the portal from opening. FITZ couldn’t stand to hear her being hurt and therefore led Hydra on Maveth. Hive came back, people--including Lincoln!--died, and it all could’ve been avoided.

Sooooooo, this kinda turned into a rant. Sorry, nonnie! tl;dr I could ship fs if it were written better, but at this point the ship has totally sunk for me. It’s way too late for the writers to fix all the many, many things they did wrong.

Did you see the Fitzsimmons framework clip? Kinda made me cringe. All the other characters got seperate videos.

This is THE WORST on so many different levels. For one thing: yeah, all the others got to be separate. Just like that stupid 50th episode video where everybody else was interviewed separately but nope, gotta put Iain and Liz together. It’s just confirmation of what we already knew, which is that while EVERYBODY ELSE is getting their own distinct arc in the framework, Jemma’s is gonna be alllllllllll about Fitz.

Second, they used that stupid “goodness of your heart~” speech which I hate to ITTY BITTY BITS. Ugh.

Third, Fitz is a bad person because they “stole” Jemma from his life? Really? That’s the best they could do? I don’t even---I can’t---like I literally can’t form words about how much this annoys me. Way to TOTALLY DENY Fitz’s agency and ALSO put an incredible burden on Jemma.

There are very few things I hate as much as the trope of a good guy’s light in the darkness~, where the hero doesn’t have any/enough lines so his love interest needs to be his conscience and his guide. It’s total bs (if he doesn’t have his OWN conscience why the hell am I supposed to buy him as a good guy? oh, he didn’t kill that guy because his girlfriend told him not to? am I supposed to be impressed by his self-control? if he’s the kind of hero who kills people, that’s cool, but he should at least OWN it. he doesn’t get to go around being held back only by the word of the woman he’s in love with and then criticize OTHER people for killing.)

whoops, sorry. Got on a little rant for a second there. Issues from another fandom, don’t mind me.

Anyway!

My point is, if Fitz is a good guy, he’s a good guy. If he’s not, he’s not. Don’t pin that shit on Jemma’s presence in his life.

We know (or at least can guess, based on promo pics) that Daisy’s Hydra in the framework. Are we saying she became that because someone was stolen~ from her life? May’s definitely Hydra; are we blaming that on Coulson never being SHIELD?

If Fitz is an ass in the framework, well, it’s the framework. People are different. The entire WORLD is different. We don’t need to boil it down to Jemma not being there with him. 

Not to mention how insensitive that shit is to Jemma, who JUST had to KILL the Fitzbot. Like she’s not gonna be traumatized enough from that, we’re gonna pile on that if she’d just let him put her in the framework like he wanted, framework Fitz would be his usual kind and monkey-loving self? She really needs that?

It’s just another excuse for the writers to prop up their wish-fulfillment ship---and to use Daisy to do it, which is extra gross. God forbid she comfort Jemma in a way that doesn’t push fs, or else we might get the crazy idea that she cares about Jemma for Jemma’s sake and not the ship, and we can’t have that.

I totally agree with you, it’s honestly one of the reasons why I’m starting to like the FS fandom less and less.

Yeah it’s truly disheartening the “FS >>>> the integrity of Jemma and Fitz as characters we supposedly love” culture of this fandom. 

I had to live it during the whole Maveth debacle and now again. I follow a really select group of AoS blogs but I made the mistake of going into the Fitz tag cause I got excited about the sneak peek, boy regret it.

I had actually written a long rant, but I felt it just got too negative, so I’m not posting it just yet. So for now I’ll just say that I wish AoS had some lgbtq+ representation. I love the show and I think it does a lot of positive in terms of breaking the mold, having a big female cast and all. But Joey isn’t around anymore, and with everyone of opposite gender kinda lining up to just get with each other, I’m sitting here crossing my fingers for a gay or bi character. Just a little representation. A smudge of it. I love AoS but right now I’m actually really bummed out :’(

Just as a proof of what AoS publicity has done I was talking today with a friend who is a regular viewer, meaning he watches the show when he can (he hasn't finished s3 yet) and is not full invested in fandom life. In all and all he said to me:

How is the show working now? Is it the same show or are they booting it for it to be a show about ghost rider? Is he the protagonist now? All I've seen is news about this guy and how does that even work? What about the team? Are they still part of the show? I'm very confused. It's like the show ended and they are promoting a new one with non of the character from before involved. I honestly thought it was something new but I wasn't going to watch it, it didn't seem interesting.

And this is probably what most of the people are getting. The fandom part, us, we're not so many and we know (or we think we know) the show is still our show, it's still about the fam, but the rest of the people are getting a different message and they are not even getting engaged by it. AoS has been playing this game of trying to get new viewers alienating the old ones, barely getting the attention of the former and losing the interest of the latter.
