Barbary Sheep Ammotragus lervia

Also known as aoudad. They are native to rocky mountains in North Africa and parts of West Africa, primarily surrounding the barren center of the Sahara Desert. Barbary sheep are found in arid mountainous areas where they graze and browse grasses, bushes, and lichens.

Aoudad (Ammotragus lervia)

Conservation Status- Vulnerable

Habitat- Northern Africa

Size (Weight/Length)- 140 kg; 102 cm

Diet- Grasses; Shrubs; Fruit

Cool Facts- The aoudad, or Barbary sheep, is a mountain master. Due to living in a desert mountain range, the aoudad is able to get all of its water from food. They will still drink water when it is available, but it is unnecessary to their survival. From a standing position, aoudad can jump directly into the air 2 meters straight up. Capable of sprinting up sheer cliff walls, aoudad can easily escape most predators. The aoudad is one of the only animals left in existence that has the name Barbary that is not extinct. With the extinction of the Barbary lion and Barbary leopard, the aoudad’s only predators are humans and feral dogs. Hunted for their horns and overall size, they are a prized trophy animal. Due to competition with livestock and overhunting, aoudad are considered vulnerable.
