Portuguese Headcanons for Madeira

She’s more belligerent than both her twin brother, Azores, and Portugal;

She was raised by both Portugal and Britain who invaded Madeira twice;

She’s a fighter, since her place was constantly being targeted by pirates, she learned how to defend herself;

Her main rivals are Brazil and the Canary Islands:

Brazil ruined her economy when he began producing more sugar cane than her. He also “stole” her Poncha recipe to create the Caipirinha;

The Canary Islands is her main rival regarding tourism. Plus, they’re Spanish;

She used to be very close with Venezuela;

She’s very proud of her bananas, her tropical islands, and Ronaldo!

Mystic creatures: “The brasilian Boitatá”

After the unpredictable joke they performed on America, Madeira and Açores called Brasil, their brother and the self-proclaimed king of jokes in south America.

Brasil- Olá, my little sisters. What can I do for both of you?

Madeira- We are bored.

Açores- Yeah, it’s so boring here and we though you could help us.

Brasil- What do have to do with this?

Açores- We want to make this Halloween the scariest possible.

Brasil- Oh, I get it. You girls are tired of our old man’s taste, really if you want your independence, I can help you.

Madeira- We are fine, thanks. We are just thinking that it could be fun for us to just do some harmless jokes to the countries in the world.

Brasil- That’s a cool idea, but the old man is going to think I am corrupting you girls.

Açores- Dad, is never finding this out.

Brasil- Yeah, ok. So, what are you two thinking?

Madeira- I though about breaking all the flowers in the countries.

Brasil- Np, if people find out we have to pay and where all broke.

Açores- Sending all bulls to attack.

Brasil- Do you always think of that?

Açores- Well, do you have a better idea?

Brasil- Yes, I have and I have just the victim.

In a different place England, Norway and Romania where having a magic reunion. This day they were going to summon a demon from hell to test a theory of England’s.

England- I hope it works.

Romania- I will work…

Norway- …if both of you are concentrated.

All three of them closed their eyes and said their spell and a snake was in front of them.

Romania- Oh my god!! It’s a Boitatá!!

Norway- The snake that can petrify people.

England- Really, never heard of it.

Romania- It’s from Brasil… it’s a cool legend but I think this snake it’s a fake.

England- Why would you say that?!

Norway- The fact that you’re looking at it and you’re fine.

England- What a butter? It was for nothing, might as well try looking at this legend.

Outside the window Brasil and his sisters were watching.

Açores- That was awful.

Brasil- No, they are just mean.

Madeira- That was not smart at all, they are called the magic trio for some reason.

Brasil- I wanted to show my culture, don’t be like that.

Açores- Well, if you want your title to stick, I suggest to put in some work… irmão.

Brasil- Next one, it’s going to be so great that the world is going to turn.

Madeira- Cool. Can we stay at your house until Halloween?

Brasil- Yeah… sure... I think the old man won’t mind.

Açores- Oh. He will be busy…

Brasil- What did you do?

Madeira- Don’t worry you will find out.

Both sisters made an evil laugh and Brasil just knew, he was screed.

Day 23 - Exploration (Blue)

First off: I’m so tired that I don’t even remember my name. Wait, it is Joana. Did I said hi? Oh, hi!

Really, I had so much today. But, indeed, I procrastinate a lot while writing this excerpt. I shouldn’t talk too much.

By the way, for some reason, my excerpt for the prompt “orchard” don’t appear on the tag, so you can find here.

Today, I’m going to show you how the Island of Madeira was discovered. Ok, my headcannon how Madeira was discovered.

To understand, you just need to know:

- It was the year of 1419;

- The name I use for Portugal is Afonso and for Madeira (or Funchal, as you wish), Mateus;

- Porto Santo was discovered first;

- Looks fluffy, but it isn’t. Beware.

Please, enjoy! And, if you find some mistake, please, tell me. I’m so tired that it’s probably that I didn’t correct well. (Edit: Two mistakes. TWO. See? God.)

This was his first trip on the sea. And he couldn't deny that he was excited by that experience. All in himself indicated a visible and jovial enthusiasm. He paced up and down in an animated rush, alerting everyone to his passing. That's until he was caught.

"Hey, Salvador! You have to stay quiet before some sailor throws you into the water, lad."

Salvador barked at Afonso who laughed; it was the first voyage on the sea to Salvador, a black-coated Portuguese water dog. It was common for fishermen to take these dogs to the sea; they had already saved them from many troubles thanks to the swimming skills of these gentle dogs.

"Don't talk too much, Afonso, you aren't better," one of the sailors declared, laughing hysterically. This attracted the attention of the others. "You're just going up and down of the crow's nest."

"I wanted to see if we had already could see some land..."

"You know, we wouldn't get anywhere in half an hour. Not even Porto Santo!"

The immortal pouted, annoyed at that realization. It was also his first time on a vessel of that size and he was so excited for the adventure. After all, what would he find out? Enchanted lands? Magical and unimaginable creatures? Terrible sea monsters?

He had only one certainty: he would discover the unknown and prove whether the myths and legends of mortals were true or not. And that, in his humble opinion, was a great honour.

The dog barked again and disengaged itself from the man's arms, then ran to the stern. The sailor rolled his eyes; he liked the dog, he was an excellent companion and he made things very lively, but he had too much energy and always wanted to play. He was too old for that.

Thankfully Afonso was there, equally full of energy, to tire him out.

He didn't even need to know the immortal well to imagine that he was going after the animal (and thus escape the simple tasks which he was in charge!). And there he was.

The Portuguese ran after the dog, almost bumping into the other sailors (who were doing their duties, unlike somebody!). The animal was perched on the stern wall, trying to see the water; he couldn't because he was too small. Afonso picked him up in his arms and this allowed him to dazzle himself with the view of the blue horizon. The Portuguese didn't know that, but that was a great moment for the little animal.

Watching the sea, from that point, showed how small they were in that immense ocean, in the world and in the universe. But Afonso would prove otherwise; he would show to everyone how humans, his people in particular, could be great. The descendants of his people would tell their stories to their children and grandchildren, and let the latter tell the following ones until it was marked in History. They would accomplish the impossible. They would make History.

Salvador noticed something; it was a quick, almost imperceptible movement, something to plunge into the water. He barked loudly, angry, and tried to let go of Afonso; he wanted to jump into the water and go after the creature he had seen. Almost immediately, the Portuguese put the dog on the ground.

"What is it, Salvador?"

The water dog continued to bark, jumping in hope of reach the wall. Afonso, of course, was confused. What had he seen? He looked at the water and saw nothing special. It was strange, but he knew there must be something there, or else Salvador wouldn't have become like that.

"Land in sight!" the topman warned, loudly. Afonso looked at the crow's nest, in awe, and smiled.

He called Salvador to follow him and they both ran to the bow. The view was amazing – the green of that forest acclaimed the title of the most beautiful in the world and even of the dreams.

Everyone on board, even him as incredible can be, began to prepare everything to dock.

Afonso, when he stepped on the sand of the beach, felt himself to be the King of the World. No one has stepped on that ground and he was the first; what a great discovery!

However, his mood was soon shaken: the forest was very dense and they couldn’t hardly explore the confines of the island. They would have to set the fire in the forest. They did so and the sound of several birds in panic was heard. He and his comrades returned to the small boat and headed for the great vessel; however, they stopped when they weren’t even in the middle.

... That was... Sounds of a child crying? No, it was impossible, there was no one there. It must have been a bird.

But no, it wasn’t. Afonso knew well who belonged that cry. It was the personification of the island, he was sure. Someone like him.

He jumped into the water and swam to the beach, ignoring the calls for him. He ran to the forest and, taking advantage of the path made by fire, entered it, guided by the cry of the lost child. He was terrified at the thought of someone being injured in that adventure, which made him ignore the likelihood that he too would be injured, but, thanks God, he was wet and that would lessen the chances.

It came to a part that the fire hadn’t come yet and the sound was getting closer and closer. He shouted, looking for some living soul in that area. He had to get out of there as quickly as possible. Adrenaline raced through his body as if struck by a bizarre energy and his heart just wanted to get out of his chest.

And then he saw him, curled up between the roots of a huge tree. He was a small boy, with light brown hair, covered with leaves from the island's trees, and grey eyes full of tears. He was horrified, he never has seen fire before. The little boy wore a burnt, beige robe, which left-side of it was torn.

Afonso's eyes widened; the little one was injured. A horrible burn on his hip.

The navigator had to hurry and took the child in his lap, fulfilling it with his wet coat. He ran out of the forest.

And it was thus that Afonso meet and saved Mateus from the fire that the sailors had set.
