Georges (amused) : You have a stutter?!

Camille : I do if i'm quiet for a long time, that's why i talk such a lot, i need to - anyway, their majesties were warm inside their carriage, while the rest of us mere mortals froze, and even after they drove away, Robespieere continued delivering the oration to the pouring heavens.

i think that historical fiction is allowed to distort historical ppl for the Themes if it wishes (danton/desmoulins/robespierre/saint-just etc) but what Mantel did with the Duplays girls is like

you didn't need to flatten them ALL into sexual predators. where did that come from. and she doesnt even like, mention the Society of Revolutionary Women

like the book definitely has strong themes, but none of them are gender and the revolution, mostly just that it was bad for women at the time, generally, but not a proper picture of what women *did* about it

thinking about the apogs ending again and robespierre’s focus on negative space - the fact that history is made up of invisible people and if progress requires you to be forgotten, so be it - allowing him to cope with sacrificing his friends because by the end, they’re already absences to him. just like himself. already incorporated into the meshwork of historical time. versus camille’s desire for immortality and inability to consciously make that sacrifice when faced with the reality of violence against people he knows - like barnave, like louis suleau - because it’s positive touch that matters to him. because he wants to make people feel like they “breathe ice, silk and wine.” liberty “carved in marble and covered in flowers.”

history is fiction. he would like the world transparent too. it’s forcing yourself to live not to live but for a future that won’t remember you, that will retroactively unwrite you if it doesn’t distort you beyond recognition. how fouquier-tinville of all people has to comfort robespierre after their last meeting. “you’ll get over him.” camille makes people want to touch him, but robespierre can’t even bring himself to acknowledge that part of him. the irony is that in the end, he did anyway - with the last red stroke of a blade through the throat, the last and most terrible touch sublimated away into empty spaces, gaps in the lace.
