Apollo and three Muses from the ballet "Apollon Musagète"
Apollo or Apollon Musagète is a neoclassical ballet composed by Igor Stravinsky and choreographed by George Balanchine in 1928. The ballet centers around Apollo, the young god of music, who is visited and instructed by three Muses: Calliope, Polyhymnia & Terpsichore. The ballet takes Classical antiquity as its subject, though its plot suggests a contemporary situation. Balanchine regarded Apollo as his artistic coming of age. It was with this work that Balanchine, at age 24, achieved international recognition.
