Silas House’s new novel #southernmost has received a fair bit of attention lately. Often compared with Ron Rash, Robert Morgan is another excellent contemporary Appalachian author. I have only read his poetry so far, but I found this proof for a couple bucks last week and figured it was a cool little item though I do not know much about the novel itself. I kinda like advanced reader copies or proof copies like this one especially when I can pair it with a first edition of the same work. I know I didn't post much this summer, but now that school is back in session, and I've need for more distractions, I should start posting more regularly again. Though I enjoy reading poetry from all over the world, 450 pages of pre-16th century Irish verse is difficult for me to slough through in a week. So, distraction: I found this on eBay for a difficult to swallow $8, and it arrived in the mail today! This is a signed first edition of another of Jesse Stuart's novels, 'Mr. Gallion's School.' I haven't read this, but perhaps after the endless pages of Irish verse are finished? Like a lot of the books Stuart signed, this one is inscribed. Interestingly, I stopped by a book shop a few weeks ago and saw the complete works of Jesse Stuart had just been purchased by the shop, all inscribed first editions. I'll take some solace with this one. In keeping with the Appalachian theme of late, here is a signed first edition of Charles Frazier's third novel 'Nightwoods.' I picked this up in Asheville last fall. Probably best known for 'Cold Mountain' which was adapted for film, this one is set in the mid-20th century instead of the Civil War. I've not read it yet, is this worth reading? A gift from @bookedupinknoxville , this is a collection of poetry by one Jeff Daniel Marion, another in my expanding southern Appalachian lit collection. Before receiving this work, I was unaware of him. Here is an excerpt from one of his poems about a lady bagpiper at a river/road's edge: "She plays for them all, both dirge and surging hymn, for what has passed and is passing as we slip into the currents of traffic, the changed lights bearing us away." The book is in very good condition, with the lightest dust spotting to the top edges of the pages and dust jacket, overall Very Good+ condition of this first printing. Just read this for a class. Such a powerful story of pursuit and endurance. If you haven't read it, I'd suggest it. Some scholars have debated if it is even a novel. I bought this a couple years ago at a Knoxville shop. It is a first edition fourth printing but signed with a short inscription. 'To Lor (?) Chandler - Charles Frazier'.
