lord. there's been so much doom n gloom coming out my mouth on this blog lately surrounding appalachia. really sorry for that.

i don't wanna leave the impression that appalachia is withering away or something when i'm drawing attention to issues, cause she's not going nowhere. she's ancient. she's been through e v e r y t h i n g and is stronger than anything people might try to inflict upon her.

but with all these talks lately, and with the conversation recentered on us because of fuckface vance... idk. i just don't wanna compound upon it i guess.

we've always had our troubles, yeah, but we also got ancient mountain magic up the hollers that can't be flushed out. hard times and JD's walnut ass can't take appalachia away from us.

Cave

Son came over yesterday to return a borrowed shovel and pick; also to show me the photos he took while he and Roommate were caving. Caving underneath our town (god bless Appalachian limestone). Going all the way back in a modest-sized cave system with multiple tight crawls only two very SLIM young men could possibly do. I did not convey to him just how much of the cauld grue that made me feel. I did squeak, "oh! dear!" several times.

He was covered in dirt and scrapes and scratches, and very happy.

Today I’m going to start a basic gym regimen to prepare for my hike. I’ve been very anxious about the whole hike. Recently someone asked me what I would do if i didn’t finish. I didn’t know how to respond to the notion that I wouldn’t achieve this goal I have been thinking about for years. To think that I had never once considered that I wouldn’t make it. I have never been out in the backcountry other than field training (which minus well be car camping), never climbed mountains, never hiked for an extended period of time in the backcountry and never done a lot of the things I for see myself doing on this journey. But I have done one thing and that’s never give up on something I wanted to do. If I have to crawl on my hands an knees I will make it to Maine.

Statement: When groundwater and air became polluted with toxic chemical leaks that resulted in environmental devastation, the section of the Appalachian Trial that cuts through Hot Springs close down, breaking the trail into two trail sections as opposed to a contiguous trail.

Fracking caused chemical leaks that polluted the French Broad River and its tributaries beyond use. The environment around the rivers followed quickly: wildlife mutated or died, trees rotted, and land grew barren. When the environment went, so did all other attractions: Appalachian Trail, hiking in general, the hot springs spa, cyclists, bikers, Pisgah National Park. Within a few years the primary source of income for the county disappeared. As a result, the small towns dotting the river that most heavily relied on this income disintegrated and consolidated to one: Marshall.

There I did it!!!!

I just ripped out my heart and posted the first two pages of my book! There is more to come. I feel like I need to explain a couple things real quick. First, I've wrote my whole life but never showed it to anybody so this is hard for me, this is my private world that I have lived in for years. Secondly, I know the car accident part is a little winded but it was sort of a therapy for me I plan on cutting it down some. I was in a bad car accident, then I later lost my sister to a horrific car accident, and my dad was one of the first cops there. The details are kinda taken from those two incidents, but not completely. I'm a daydreamer so that's how I deal with my traumas. Thirdly I know it's not in perfect condition, everything but the last sentence is in italic. I don't have the internet other than my cell so I had to set and type it in on my cell which is a little irritating so bare with me. So pleeeeease be gentle with me I'm putting a big piece of my heart out there I expect to get a lot of "I HATE IT SUCK LOSER!!!" But I would appreciate if you could at least do it constructively.
