today it rained and i found it hard to focus on my menial tasks at work. i kept thinking of my time spent being studied at the apple program.
you see, where i live there is a special program that accepts 6 or so students a semester of all ages. its at our local hospital in the child and adolescent psychiatry wing, there they study special cases to find out what makes them tick. everything you do there is monitored and studied from your test answers to how you interact with your fellow students by a group of trained doctors.
i was there for a year and a bit around the age of 13, in my class there where two students who where older then me and several that where younger, everyday we would get one hour of break and every other thing was set per person. during break you could read or play one of the chosen games with the others. fridays we would do group activities, ether cooking or crafting. we were always under surveillance...
at some point we were each given individual testing by one of the doctors/acting teachers that included yes or no, pantomime, expressions, and puzzles to assess our mental abilities and impairments...
i'll never forget my first day, an hour in one of the younger students in front of me started freaking out, screaming and hitting his desk. i looked around to see if anyone was going to help him, or if i was supposed to do something? no one moved! they didn't even acknowledge his hissy fit.. i didn't know what to do, so i remembered my manners "when in a new social situation follow the motions of those around you" and settled back down to work. in a little while he tired out and settled down..
when i was to go back to regular high school my mother was given a full report of my probable outcome. i was going to be lucky if i ever finished highschool, i would probably never leave home, i would not be able to handle higher education, i do not have the fine motor skills needed to do small work, i would find it hard to keep a job... lets just say the prognosis was grim.. i never found this out at the time, it wasn't until i graduated high school with honors that she told me what had gone on...
sometimes i remember, it wasn't a bad place or cold, it was just a strange experience i don't think many other people share.. sharing this story will expand the understanding and knowledge of the reader. not many people know of the apple program, or other programs like it... i can't forget.
