Thanks for all your information regarding the NCCC! Unfortunately it seems it likely don't qualify compared to other candidates (especially in lack of professional references needed) but it's the thought that counts. Any tips for those in my position lacking a bit of americorps qualities?

For the references: Put someone(s) down who knows your work ethic and professional qualifications. It doesn't need to be your boss, especially if you don't like them. Put down a teacher you liked, a pastor/minister, a family you babysat for a few times, or (and they'll really like this) someone at an organization you volunteered at. People in those positions get asked all the time if they'll be good references. Even if you screwed up everywhere you ever tried to do anything, someone will give you a reference.

And if you did screw up? Go middle aged white man confidence on it and put down references that don't match with exactly what they're looking for. Put down a roommate who saw you get up and go to work or school every day. Put down the coworker who trained you and list them as a "mentor".

If you're really struggling to come up with references (or anything AmeriCorps application-wise call this number: 1-800-942-2677. This is the AmeriCorps main line and they can direct you to someone who can coach you through the application and give you tips on what references they would accept.

I was thinking about applying as a writer but honestly backed out because I don't have a lot of recent examples lol but I can certainly reconsider 👀 may I ask what I guess do you have in mind specifically for the prose you'd like in the zine?

I don't have a specfic prose or format I'm looking for to be honest. I'm hoping for this to be a project that will allow for creativity of various kinds.

It could be homebrew-esque writing to more poetry pieces. I'm honestly open to seeing anything!

I also plan to give each writer a chapter artist or two to work with to create illustrations to go along with any writing done.

The application has a couple of vague topic suggestions that I thought of when brainstorming the idea for the project but you're certainly not limited to that and anything ticked is not a final selection should you be chosen.

Hello, I am interested in applying as a page artist for the zine! However, I am only 17 and won’t become 18 until April this year. Would I still be considered as a contributor, or no?

Hello! If you turn 18 by July 2022 (our proposed preorder period), you will be able to participate in our zine as a contributor. Please note that you'll need to have a Paypal account set up by this time as well.

Weekly Question Roundup #1

Good evening, good morning and hello!

As promised, here’s the first weekly question roundup!

These questions come from people’s applications, the AI Discord server, and private messages.

Most are about applications, as is to be expected; like what examples are acceptable, and how writers can work with the word limit. But there are also questions about things like relationships in the zine or what mediums contributors can use.

Questions are under the cut!

Will you provide any sort of themes for contributors?

The zine itself will not have a theme. If you need help coming up with ideas, let us know after you’re accepted, and we’ll help you brainstorm!

What charity is this going to?

We have a list of options, but we’d like to discuss it with our contributors before making a final decision.

Currently we’re looking at charities for the LGBT+ community, cancer patients and survivors, or children’s welfare and support.

Can I use fics that are over 1500 words as examples? What about under 1500 words?

It’s completely fine if you’d like to go under the limit, but please do not go over it. This is both to make it easier for us to go through all the applications, and to confirm you can still write quality fic with a shorter word count.

If you wanted to have one 3000 word fic and one 1500 word fic, that would count as your three examples and would also be fine (but please don't have 1 fic that's 4500 - we still need at least one short example). However, keep in mind that you’d still have to keep your zine fic under 1500, if you’re accepted.

Will you be checking apps as you get them, or only after they close?

We’ll be giving apps scores as we receive them to save time, but we’ll only actually decide on contributors after apps close.

Can I include sketches as examples?

You can,, but more preferably as a last resort - for example, if you have a sketch that shows off your composition skills better than any finished work, then that’s fine. However, please include at least one colored and complete work.

Can I change my application later?

Yes, just resubmit it and leave a note so that we’re aware, and can update our sheets accordingly.

Can I draw a comic for the zine?

Yes! However, that will count as your one illustration, and as such, it will have to fit in a single page. You’ll also have to be careful to make sure any dialogue will still be readable at print size.

I do a weird medium (IE: Spray Paint Art on posterboard) would it still be possible to submit a piece? (asked by @genderfluid-chameleon​)

There is no limit on what medium you can use. Just please make sure you’re able to get a clear, high-quality, 300 dpi image of your work, and show in your application that you can.

If I’m accepted as a contributor, can I receive only a digital copy as compensation and forfeit my physical copy?

Yes. In that situation, you could choose to either give your bundle to a friend, or we could put it in a giveaway - your choice.

Are OCs allowed?

If you want to have them as side characters in the background, that’d be alright. However, the focus must be on existing characters. This goes for both artwork and fic.

Is it okay if I include spoilers for (X) in my application?

There’s no need to worry about spoiling AI or the Zero Escape trilogy. For anything else, if you’re concerned about spoiling a mod, just make a note of what it spoils. Thanks for thinking of us!

Can you give more details on the limits mentioned in the FAQ for characters aged 17-19?

We’ve decided that, for characters within that age group, established relationships will only be allowed within a maximum age gap of 2 years. Relationships with a larger age gap will have to be handled carefully, and discussed with a mod before the idea can be executed, to make sure no boundaries are crossed.

The 2-year age gap limit does NOT apply when both characters are 20 or over. And, of course, as stated in the FAQ, romantic relationships with Mizuki will not be permitted.

Hi, I'd like to know how you be checking if applicants are not cis? I'm interested in the zine however I didn't mention on any of my social media that I identify as non binary and I'm not sure if that'll be a problem. Thank you for replying if you do!

Hi there! As we cannot force ourselves and do something akin to a “background check” we are solely going based on honor system. This is a zine meant for trans and non binary content creators, people who are cis should be able to respect that and not lie about their identity. 

We highly doubt something like that will happen because as a community we like to trust that others will allow us to create this zine for those who need it - it’s so important for us non-cis people to have something inspiring and to see recognition in our favorite media! 

On the application we will ask for your gender identity and we trust you will be honest when answering it. If someone were to try and apply and create a piece that is suppose to support trans and nb headcanons WHILE pretending to be non-cis, then they are certainly not an ally of the community.

Hello ! Question about the Color Cafe zine’s application : can we try to apply for several roles (for example page artist and writer) or only one apply is allowed ?

Hello, anon! You may apply for several roles at once, yes! The application is designed in such a way to select multiple roles.

If you are hoping to create multiple pieces (a fic and a coloring page), we are likely only assigning one role to accepted contributors (so you are likely only going to be assigned one fic OR one coloring page). If you're hoping to create multiple pieces across different roles, you may elaborate in the last section of the application and we will consider it while evaluating your application.
