Hi, I looked at some of the tags related to obtaining a reference letter and I was still wonder what would be a good time to start looking into getting references from profs for grad school? Would it be wise to ask a professor early even if it is a whole school year before the application is submitted? Is the beginning of 3rd year to early?
You should have a good idea of who your references are one year before submitting your application. This will give the referee enough time to get to know you and they will also be able to write a more concise reference letter.
Here’s a helpful timeline that will assist in preparing you for grad school applications.

Peace Corps Application Timeline
May/June 2012- Application worked on. References submitted
July 2012- Application submitted
August 29th, 2012- Interview (via phone because a recruiter wasn’t near my area)
September 6th, 2012- Nomination as a secondary science/health educator in Africa
September 20th, 2012- Get an e-mail from placement officer wanting me to submit updated resume, skills sheet, and graduation date.
…At this point I assume I’ve been pre-medically cleared because I haven’t been contacted at all by the medical office and you usually don’t work with the placement office until you’re pre-cleared.
October 2012- Waiting. I send out an e-mail asking if there’s anything else I need to do or submit. Quick response telling me I’ve done everything I can and to just sit tight.
November 2012- Waiting
December 2012- Waiting. I send another e-mail asking about the status of my application. Am told that the person over all of the placements for June in my nomination section has until mid-February to send out invitations, but are being worked through reviewing nominees now. Let’s hope I hear before February!!!
December 5, 2012- Received e-mail from placement specialist asking to answer questions pertaining to logistics, expectations for service, family and friends, host family, primary assignment, diet, and site.
December 5, 2012- E-mailed completed questionnaire to placement specialist.
December 10, 2012- Final review of application is complete!! Just recieved an e-mail from my placement specialist saying that she's reviewed my application and wants to know if I'm comfortable with being an "Early Generation Volunteer"
December 10, 2012- I call my placement specialist as soon as I receive the e-mail and get more info on it. Basically I'll be going to a country that has been just recently opened and will be one of the first few volunteers back in country laying the ground work. She says she feels confident to invite me after our chat! I should receive the official invite w/ country by the end of the week!!!
December 10, 2012- Invited to serve in....Sierra Leone!! I will be an "EGV" in secondary science education and leave for staging June 11, 2013.
December 18, 2012- Aspirational statement and Resume updated and submitted.

March 10, 2013- Turn in note from neurologist that says I will be fully healed within four months with no reoccurrence suspected.
March 12, 2013- Get letter from medical stating they've removed me from the Sierra Leone training class :( and have posted a follow up task that's due four months from today. I need to upload the note from my neurologist stating I'm completely better and an okay for them to clear me by July 12, 2013.
June 2013 - wave goodbye to my original departure and cry a little (okay a lot, it's upsetting okay!!)
July 8, 2013 - Follow up with neurologist.
July 9, 2013 - Upload all required medical documents
July 12, 2013 - Contact previous placement officer and inquire about next steps and updated timeline of my application.
July 14, 2013- Receive a reply - she says to call her and discuss the updated timeline (bite my nails in suspense for the weekend)
July 16, 2013 - Call placement officer and discuss my illness, graduation plans, how I feel about peace corps service, and how I'd feel about a change in sector -I'm eligible for health extension and youth development as well as science education.
If I choose to stick w/ education my earliest departure would be June 2014, but if I'm flexible with sector I could leave between Jan-March 2014. I say I'm open to any sector, the earlier the better! She ends the conversation by saying I will receive my invitation within a week!
