Aprhrodite Kneeling, at the British Museum.

In the fourth century BC the sculptor Praxiteles created a life-size naked statue of Aphrodite (Venus). It was placed in a shrine in her temple at Knidos (or  Cnidus) in south-western Turkey. It was an important innovation in classical sculpture, and subsequent Hellenistic sculptors created several new types of nude Aphrodite figures, that further emphasized the sexual nature of her cult.This trend perhaps reflected both the rising social status of women and changes in male attitudes towards women: previously only male statues had been naked.

Most of these statues show Aphrodite ineffectually attempting to cover her nakedness with her hands. The action in fact only succeeds in drawing the viewer's eye towards the sexual areas. In this statue the voluptuous Aphrodite crouches down and turns her head sharply to her right, as if surprised by her audience.

Στο τέταρτο αιώνα π.Χ. γλύπτη ο Πραξιτέλης δημιούργησε ένα πραγματικού μεγέθους γυμνό άγαλμα της Αφροδίτης. Τοποθετήθηκε σε λάρνακα στο ναό της στην Κνίδο στη νοτιοδυτική Τουρκία. Ήταν μια σημαντική καινοτομία στην κλασική γλυπτική, και στην επακόλουθη Ελληνιστική οι γλύπτες δημιούργησαν αρκετές νέες μορφές γυμνών  φιγούρων της Αφροδίτης, που τόνισαν περαιτέρω τη σεξουαλική φύση της λατρείας της. Η τάση αυτή ίσως αντανακλά τόσο την αυξανόμενη κοινωνική θέση των γυναικών και των αλλαγών στην αρσενική στάση απέναντι στις γυναίκες, (στο παρελθόν μόνο αρσενικά αγάλματα ήταν γυμνά). 

Τα περισσότερα από αυτά τα αγάλματα δείχνουν την αναποτελεσματική προσπάθεια της Αφροδίτης να καλύψει τη γύμνια της με τα χέρια της. Η κίνηση στην πραγματικότητα καταφέρνει μόνο να στρέψει μάτι του θεατή προς τις σεξουαλικές της περιοχές. Σε αυτό το άγαλμα η αισθησιακή Αφροδίτη υποκλίνεται προς τα κάτω και στρέφει το κεφάλι της απότομα προς τα δεξιά της, σαν να εκπλήσσεται από το κοινό της.
