#THISDAYINHISTORY, April 4, 1973: 🌇🎀 A ribbon-cutting ceremony is held in New York’s Lower Manhattan to dedicate the original #WorldTradeCenter. At 110 stories each, 1 WTC, or the North Tower, and 2 WTC, the South Tower, would provide nearly 10 million square feet of office space. Reaching more than a quarter of a mile into the sky, they were the tallest buildings in NYC, and for a brief period, the tallest in the world. But more than just architecture, the Twin Towers represented the power of New York City and the economic vigor of the United States. Relations between the two began to deteriorate almost immediately, especially after US concerns over the Soviet instalment of Communist regimes in Eastern Europe prompted President Truman to embark on a policy of “containment” by aiding the non-Communist regimes which surrounded the Soviet bloc. Finland Day 2 (continued)

The walk to the spot for hitch-hiking is a long and bitter one.  But the hospital is a decent spot and I don’t wait long before I am picked up by a gentleman, who tells me he can only leave me in a place called Linnanmaa.  There’s a supermarket and petrol station.  

It’s Spring and Winter at the same time, with tufts of snow sprinkling from above and landing in glassy puddles on the ground.  I start off in the Linnanmaa parking lot, targetting shoppers going into the supermarket.  After close to half and hour, my fingers are starting to freeze.  I need to move.  I strap on my provisions, and lug myself over to the petrol station.   It’s only a few metres away, but it’s semi-abandoned, with only two cars or so every ten to fifteen minutes.  I eventually head across the road to a bus stop.

Worst decision.  I stand for what feels like an hour as cars go past.  A glacial wind soon ensures that I can’t feel my cheeks.  I consider crying out of sheer frustration, but won’t risk having icicles on my face.  

Eventually beaten, I head back into the supermarket.  I connect to the wifi and grudgingly book the 4pm bus to Rovaniemi, leaving a few hundred kilometres from where I am. 

I humbly call it a day for the hitch-hitching, unload my bag into a shopping cart (the coin to which a shopping attendant was kind enough to offer me), and push the trolley around the supermarket for the next couple of hours.  I need to eat and drink, and I do.

I can’t miss the 4pm bus, and as soon as 15.30, bells, and skidding and barrelling across the ice, racing to the bus stop.  The inside of the bus is like Valhalla to me.  Wi-Fi, comfy seats, my own space.  I let my Rovaniemi host I’ll be arriving in three hours.  And then I plug into Snow Town; the windows going by with an endless landscape of soft white.
