an afternoon pick-me-up was exactly what annabelle needed to bring her day to a close. her morning was spent sifting through new stock at arcane comics, a job she always PREFERRED to get done herself --- no one else had the same knack for meticulously organising each section of the store, or perhaps the woman was far too particular to let someone else take the reigns on the task. those closest to her would bring it down to the fact she’s a complete perfectionist, but she preferred the word EFFICIENT.
after her name was called, she lifted her focus from her phone to collect her coffee, the hypnotic aroma of the café was just enough to wake her senses and banish the tiredness that had been looming over her since noon.
grind time was bustling as usual, full to the brim with unfamiliar faces and those who she’d come accustomed to see each day, some who had even become loose acquaintances, exchanging pleasantries with each day. it made her feel an odd sense of comfort, as if the large city they were in was one of those tight-knit communities you’d see in movies.
mere moments before she was about to take a sip, she caught sight of the name written across her cup, a name that wasn’t her own. quickly scouring her vicinity, dark eyes zeroed in on the person who’d been ahead of her in the line. “excuse me!” she called out, her pace quickened to catch up with them. “i think our orders got mixed up. your cup doesn’t happen to say annie, does it?”
