“where is all the time that heals?”
requested by @apulseinthepages
Hi! I was wondering if you knew anything about bee flies? Are they common in North America, especially the southeast? I think I've been seeing them lately, they look like fluffy mosquitos, but I don't remember seeing them in my area up until the past couple of years. In fact, I remember the first time I saw one in my yard, I thought it was some mutated bumblebee lol. I was just wondering if they've always been common to the area, or if it's possible that they're new??
Hi there! By bee flies I presume you mean Bombyliidae, which are, yes, like fluffy mosquitoes!
For those who aren’t familiar with these precious babs:
(via bugguide)
They are fairly ubiquitous throughout the U.S., becoming more scarce further north into Canada. In New Hampshire I’ve never seen the super fuzzy ones (there’s plenty of bombyliids that are not fuzzy though) but I think that’s a matter of me not being in the right habitat enough (looking on bugguide, NH is the only state without sightings of that subfamily, but the UNH Insect Collection has them represented here). I saw one in Maine once though, in a grassland sandplain, so I’m sure they’re around. In general they’re most speciose in the southwest, as many insects are, and they’re super abundant in Florida as well. In the southeast, genera like Systoechus and Bombylius are common and are found from early spring through fall. They’re mostly ectoparasitoids of soil-dwelling insect larvae, which explains why arid environments with more sandy and bare ground area would be beneficial to them! I’d like to think they’re pollinators, with that fuzzy body, but seeing as they hold their body so far from the flower with those long legs, they likely don’t actually get much pollen on them most of the time. Still, flowers are the best place to find them!
HI! Congratulations on 3.5k followers, that's awesome!! I was wondering if I could request Baldwin Montclair + 7 for the icon challenge? Thank you!
thank you so much! I was actually hoping someone would request my favorite vampire so thank you for that <3
you can find them here.
want some?
This is random and completely out of the blue, and I know you're really into Harlots rn, so not to divert from that at all, but I was wondering if you had any Terror headcanons? Just asking out of curiousity!
I’ve been thinking about this, and maybe I’ll have more actual headcanons once I’m done with my rewatch, but for now the one conviction I keep coming back to is that Goodsir is fine, he’s fine, he’s alive and well, Silna rescued him from the mutineers before he had to do anything to Gibson and he’s adapted to life in the Arctic now, filling his days with research on the local flora and fauna and he’s doing just fine. That’s the AU I currently choose to reside in.
hi! so this is really random, but i was wondering if you might have any dark academia reading suggestions, like in the same vein as the secret history and dead poets society (which isn't a book, i know lol)??
I’ve thought about it, and I fear that I haven’t really come up with a great list! Most of these are more ‘dark’ with ‘academia’ than ‘dark academia’.
Dark Matter by Michelle Paver
The Basic Eight by Daniel Handler
Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray
The Secret Place (book 5 in a series, but can be read as a stand alone, although I’d recommend starting at the beginning) by Tana French
The Fever by Megan Abbott
If you’re looking specifically for a bit of Tartt-like writing style, I really recommend all of Tana French’s Dublin Murder Squad.
for the questions, how about all the evens?? (i love the title on your ask page btw)
so many questions! I’m so sorry for the delay in this, I started working on my response the other night and then fell asleep & accidentally deleted everything lol
(also: thank you, I love it too!)
2. have you ever found a writer who thinks just like you? if so, who?
I don’t think that I have… although there’s this book that I read in elementary school called Nick In Time (by Ted Bell) that came to mind, I guess because I feel like it’s written in a style that’s similar to how I think? but idk really lol
4. do you like your name? is there another name you think would fit you better?
When I was a kid, I went through a whole phase of trying to figure out how I felt about my name… eventually I realized that I really do like it, actually, although sometimes I wish it was a little less plain. I can’t imagine being called anything other than Emma though.
Fun fact: I wrote my college entrance essay about this!
6. are you religious/spiritual?
I am not at all religious, but I recently went to a Catholic funeral mass and was left feeling very out of place, because my brother and I were the only people there who weren’t raised in the Catholic tradition. I don’t think my beliefs about religion would be different if I had been raised Catholic, but sometimes I wish I was just so I could participate in that tradition… does that make sense?
That being said, I do believe very strongly in the idea that everything happens for a reason… I’m not sure that I would call it fate, and I’ve tried typing it out to explain like 3 different times but I can’t figure out how to describe it. I think that every decision we make has a very linear path and once we’ve started on that path, there’s something totally outside of our control that continues it.
8. what musical artists have you most felt connected to over your lifetime?
My dad (like all good British dads) introduced me to the Beatles at a very young age, and I love them. But my favorite band is probably Coldplay; there’s something very simple and yet poetic about their lyrics, and their music is just lovely.
Also when I was a kid, my aunt/godmother would play the Dixie Chicks whenever I was in the car with her, so now they remind me of road trips and childhood :’)
10. do you have a creed?
like @athenasdragon I’m not really sure what this means, but I think the answer is no?
12. dog person or cat person?
AUUGGGHH I hate this question, why do I have to pick?? I love them both, animals are just great. I have always really wanted a cat but couldn’t have one, so if you forced me to pick at gunpoint I guess I would say dogs. 🐶🐾
14. are you a musician?
Not really, but I love to sing!
16. if you’d grown up in a different environment, do you think you’d have turned out the same?
Ooh this is such an interesting question. Certainly I think if my dad hadn’t come to America, I would have had a very different experience growing up– either here with two American parents, or there with two British parents, both of which would be pretty different from the family I grew up in. I consider myself American, but having one parent who isn’t American definitely impacted my personality a lot.
As for the environment I grew up in, I think living in Seattle had a very strong influence on me as a teenager, and growing up anywhere else definitely would have made me a different person. I will love Seattle and it will be a part of me until the day I die. #WestCoastBestCoast
18. what’s your patronus?
according to Pottermore it’s like a beagle or something, and @athenasdragon agreed that I might be some kind of dog, maybe a Lab? Or maybe a horse? but idk really, if there’s something that you think suits me, lmk!
20. would you rather be in Middle Earth, Narnia, Hogwarts, or somewhere else?
LITERALLY THIS QUESTION IS THE WORST, WHY WOULD YOU. I love all 3 of those places so much, how do I choose??
Hogwarts seems like it would be the most comfortable + enjoyable to live in long-term, and Narnia would be amazing, but ultimately I think I’d choose to visit Middle-Earth, because I love Tolkien so much and because it would be fascinating + different + probably really interesting culturally.
(also I nominate Camp Half-Blood to be on this list bc I always wanted to go there when I read those books? it sounds like the COOLEST SUMMER CAMP EVER)
22. list the top five things you spend the most time doing, in order.
definitely sleeping
tbh it’s probably on the Internet
in class
in a theatre, whether that’s for rehearsal or watching a show (yay for majoring in theatre)
idek?? there’s not a lot of things that I spend a lot of time doing I guess
this makes it sound like my life is so boring lol
24. have you ever felt like you had a “mind-meld” with someone?
Like she mentioned in her ask, @athenasdragon and I can be on eerily similar wavelengths sometimes and I mesh so well with her… I love her a lot <3
But the person who comes to mind right now is my aunt, actually. She had an enormous influence on me as a person; she taught me so much and passed on so many of her values + beliefs, she supported me & gave the best advice and offered me so much, and was basically like the big sister I never had… a lot of the person I’ve become as an adult(?) came from her.
26. how would you describe your gender/sexuality?
I’ve always identified as female, and I’m pretty sure that I’m straight?? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
28. on a scale from 1 to 10, how hard is it for someone to get under your skin?
with 10 being the easiest, I’d say like a 4 maybe? I think I’m a pretty chill person, it takes a lot to make me really angry.
30. pick one of your favorite quotes.
“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places. But still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands, love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps greater still.” —J.R.R. Tolkien
